I love the process of helping a student "Learn how to Learn." I have two children who earn straight A's in academically challenging programs at the middle school and high school level. I do not expect them to earn straight A's, but I do expect them to TRY! I have a degree in Journalism from LSU in Baton Rouge and an MBA from the University of Texas in Austin. My two degrees have prepared me well to help my students in both quantitative and language arts subjects. I am a goal-oriented and fun person with whom to work. My experience in tutoring has included students who have been ill for an extended period of time and need to "catch up" as well as teaching in a college prep school in Mexico City. Many of these students had come to Mexico with Embassy families who were required to travel extensively. Their unusual attendance patterns and their limitations with new languages created a challenging academic environment. I invite you to contact me and explore the possibilities of how we can reach your academic goals!

Business

I have earned an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the University of Texas at Austin. I have written accounting software, taught the staff of several businesses how to tailor it to their needs and use it. My BA degree in Journalism included business communications and presentations. I worked for a medium sized consulting firm in their research department. My academic as well as real world experience qualifies me to help someone with a business course.
Microsoft Excel,

Microsoft Excel

Excel is such a powerful tool of analysis and flexible enough to look great. My approach to teaching a student how to use EXCEL begins with determining the reason the student wants to use a spreadsheet. If the student is a complete newcomer to spreadsheets, it is critical to start with the basics of cell identification and the math functions available to describe the task at hand. If the student is more advanced and wants to learn financial analysis with a powerful tool we begin with spreadsheet design and calculations versus the cosmetic presentations of the results. It is also important to learn database functionality within the macros which can be described into a spreadsheet.
Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

My degree in mass communications coupled with Dale Carnegie courses and a long membership in Toastmasters International uniquely qualifies me to help someone develop confidence and technique in public speaking skills. While in Mexico City at Lomas High School I taught speech to middle and high school students. I have helped business presenters edit their presentations and develop style that will close the sale!

I teach language that is useful immediately. I taught English as a second language in Mexico City in the early eighties and worked with business professionals on their specific linguistic needs, some needed help with grammar, some with written presentations and some wanted to be more skilled with every day conversation. I developed lists of vocabulary words for specific tasks and then we would accomplish those "living skills" tasks using English rather than their native language. The school with which I was affiliated had students from 32 different countries and often their parents were having a more difficult time with language than they were. I love helping someone get independent with their language!

It is important to identify what the student understands, what his or her coursework is requiring and the quickest way to meet those two. I lived in Mexico City for almost five years, I have a degree in Journalism and so I understand English well. I know how to take the intimidation out of a foreign language. Give me a try please!

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th) Math is so important for success in later school years. My experience includes tutoring elementary, middle and high school students. My education is a degree in Journalism from LSU in Baton Rouge and an MBA from University of Texas in Austin. I know math! But I know how to break it down in bite-sized pieces for someone needing help. Students need to see an immediate way to use math in the real world and it makes the lessons seem useful instead of tedious. I know how to break it down so that it is a step-by-step logical process. My 8th grade and 11th grade children both have straight A's in their work and one even placed third in a state math competition! I know how to take a kid and make them feel confident about numbers!

I first learn what the student perceives they need...then I assess what I believe the student is needing and we meet in the middle. My tutoring for math involves math facts if needed, techniques in quickly calculating the answers, and how to set up word problems which seem intimidating. I confirm that their definitions are correct and their operations are in sync. I break it down until it is simple for each student's needs.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have been trained from college study skills to corporate efficiency planning. My methods of helping a student to memorize lists, dates and other kinds of formulas needed to get through science subjects work. Some of these skills are borrowed from great books and courses I have taken such as those written by Dale Carnegie.

ACT English covers such a broad scope that I believe it is important to identify weak areas that need to be reinforced in a student's skill set...and then get to work on those skills.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra I is not scary! It is truly a building block process and I have found that many students struggling are not having trouble with the subject but with the one small block they misunderstood. Once that is identified many students move on quite quickly! Some students have trouble turning words into equations, others have trouble crunching the numbers through the equation. Let's find out what your trouble spot is and start sailing smoothly! Sincerely, R
