About Sheldran

I have a degree in General Studies from Southeastern Louisiana University. I taught in the public school system for 20 years in Tangipahoa Parish. Most of those years was in junior high/high school, but I do have experience working with Pre-K-6th grade as well. During the summer months, I tutored 7th and 8th grade Math and English.

I am very patient when it comes to students who have difficulty succeeding in reading and writing. I scaffold skills so that the student feels a sense of accomplishment with every task completed. My students are accountable for their own learning, I only serve as a mentor/facilitator.

In the 20 years that I've been in the schools system, I've also tutored pre-college/1st year college students in writing (PRAXIS & ACT).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I was a Common Core teacher for 7 years. At my high school, I conducted Common Core workshops for teachers to help them "unpack" the standards to make them easier to comprehend and teach.
I was the "pilot" classroom when Common Core was first introduced in our parish.
Although I covered fewer topics in each course, the material covered was in depth, which was great for my graduating seniors.
Nonfiction was the key to teaching critical thinking skills in all of my courses.

Praxis

For 10 years, I was the PRAXIS tutor for the paraprofessionals at my school who were training to become educators.
With the majority of the PRAXIS focusing on reading/writing skills, I used sample PRAXIS test questions to teach my students how to successfully read/comprehend standardized test questions for the LEAP, E-O-C, and ACT tests.
I found that when I used PRAXIS reading material, my students actually scored 2-3 points higher than other students in the same grade level taking the same tests.
