About Heather

I have recently resigned from being a full-time middle school math teacher. I love teaching, learning, and working with students. However, I am currently looking for part-time work in the education field while helping my fiance with our new small business.

I would enjoy working with all ages. I am easy to talk to, have great communication skills, and I even have my own resources for math and social studies if needed.

I have worked with VITA (Volunteer Instructors Teaching Adults) during one of my college semesters. I thoroughly enjoyed it and have been looking for an opportunity to work one-on-one with a student again.

I can help your child to set and achieve short-term and long-term goals. It has been shown that students are more likely to succeed academically if they can chart their own progress.
I would begin by assessing your child's needs, finding their strengths and noting areas that need improvement. This is an important way to begin the teaching and learning process. I will use my experience as a teacher and tutor to assure that your child makes adequate progress. My schedule is very flexible and I am willing to work evenings and weekends. I look forward to meeting and working with you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have taken the Math ACT myself, so I know what it consists of, including content, number of questions, and time allowed. I have taken several upper level math courses, including college algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and calculus. I also have experience teaching algebra.

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from UL in Education. I have had experience both teaching a middle school math class and tutoring students between the ages of 10-16. I have also taken the middle school math Praxis exam, which makes me qualified to teach math for grades 5-8. I have taken several teaching methods courses at UL, so I know how to plan lessons and assess student work. I have had extensive practice in writing and researching, which led to me winning the Edith Garland Dupre Caffery competition at UL for excellence in writing using primary source material. I want to use these skills to give back to youth in my community. I enjoy working one on one with students of all ages.

GED

I have great test-taking skills and I have helped others pass both the GED and ACT. I can help with math, reading comprehension, writing, science, and interpreting charts and graphs.

Geometry

Study of points, segments, triangles, polygons, circles, solid figures, and their associated relationships as a mathematical system.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra includes equations, geometry, and probability.

Reading

I have great reading comprehension and test-taking skills. I can easily show a student how to find the main idea of a passage and how to skim to find answers to questions.
