During my time in the school system, I often spent my planning period and after school hours tutoring students. The passion I have for learning helps me to inspire students to push through trials and difficulties to reach their academic goals. I love experiencing those `a-ha` moments with those I am helping!
I have taught extensive grammar topics and literature in advanced settings. For instance, the level of grammar I have taught was on par with advanced, college courses. If you are looking for help with grammar concepts such as sentence diagramming and proper syntax, I have extensive knowledge on the English language. With the intensive grammar background, I have also taught students writing techniques and prepared them for tests such as the ACT and SAT. On the literature side of ELA, I have covered works from current Young Adult novels to works on the levels of Goethe.
In my last year teaching, my students earned higher scores on their TerraNova and ACT tests than the two years prior. On average the students who took the ACT scored a 23 or higher in English portions of the test.
My love of teaching helps me reach students on a personal level. I look forward to the opportunity to assist those needing help in achieving success in their educational journey. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While I am qualified to tutor all areas of the ACT, my college degree is in English. I have taught middle and high school level students for three years. During my two years at Westminster Christian Academy I was able to increase the average English scores by 5 points. The curriculum was split between literature and grammar, and most of the content was college level concepts.
I have been teaching in the area for three years in both public and private settings. While my certification to teach is in English, I have taken multiple tests and passed all of them with flying colors to be qualified to tutor ACT math. I have assisted students in increasing their ACT scores by 5 points on average.
I taught high school students for two years. Within those two years, much of the reading materials were at advanced, collegiate levels. Due to the advanced nature of the literature covered, I was required to teach students to use context clues and other techniques to determine the themes and meanings behind works. On average, my students increased their ACT scores by 6 points.
I was a high school English teacher who spent the first three years of her college journey in elementary education. I have background in the math taught to students in this area. I also have a son in elementary school in Lafayette parish, so I am actively tutoring my own son.
After taking and passing multiple college courses focused specifically on the Praxis exam, I passed all sections of the Praxis series on the first attempt. My education on the Praxis continued after graduating college by helping othersomeone study for and pass the exam. My areas of expertise help in both the first portion of Reading and Writing, but also the second portion of expressing answers properly in regards to questions covering teaching methods and management of a classroom.
While in college I was required to take classes on public speaking. Thanks to the A I maintained throughout the course, I was one of five students asked to join the Speech and Debate team for my university. I feel that that skill of public speaking is such an important one that I required my high school English students to complete oral recitations once a quarter. The students were assigned specific excerpts or complete passages of written works to recite in front of their peers.
While teaching at Westminster Christian Academy in Opelousas, I was required to teach my 7th grade students how to properly prepare and write a full research paper. This required at least 4 smaller writing assignments in preparation. Another portion of our class time was spent focusing on study skills using a set of workbooks.
