About Grayson

Bio

My mom made me learn the piano from a very stiff teacher from a very boring book. So I quit. When I came back to music later, I was determined to have fun. Now, music is my life. I play many instruments and I have performed as a bassist around the world with some of the best musicians alive. I first began studying and teaching music in my home state of North Carolina. My mom made me learn the piano from a very stiff teacher from a very boring book. So I quit. When I came back to music later, I was determined to have fun. Now, music is my life. I play many instruments and I have performed as a bassist around the world with some of the best musicians alive. I first began studying and teaching music in my home state of North Carolina. I moved on to study in New York City and was able to appear in legendary music venues. Later, I moved to New Orleans where I live now. Before the pandemic, I was playing with iconic drummers like Shannon Powell and Herlin Riley every week. I've played with Branford and Jason Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, and even once with Stevie Wonder.

I have a wide range of interest in music. I love to play with the bow and I have experience teaching violin, viola, and cello.

I also learned trombone in my high-school marching band and I teach trombone and trumpet.
I loving working with children and beginners of all ages, especially on piano. I love to teach new students their favorite songs and also lead them to learn the basics of improvising and composing. Songwriting is one of my passions. I know thousands of standards from the American Songbook and it has informed my approach to theory, harmony, melody, improvising, and composing. I love teaching these subjects.

I also love to sing! I love working with beginners and advanced students that are interested in learning more about breath control, expanding their range, and of course, learning the traditions of the music that the student is interested in. Working on singing has led me to learn writing 4-part harmonies and I love teaching that to others.

I have been working on sight-singing ever since I was a young boy, holding up a book of music and trying to follow the arc of the notes. Years later, I'm still here working on my skills and developing my craft. I have traveled all over the world, playing and teaching music. I didn't know it when I was younger, but sight-singing is a valuable skill that can really enhance your music-making skills.

I have studied songs, tunes, lyrics, chords, rhythms... Popular music, unpopular music... I have studied in prestigious institutions and on the street corner with a stranger. All humans are music-makers. All humans have a story to tell. If you are interested in simple songwriting, I am too! If you are interested in advanced harmony and sophisticated melodic ideas, so am I! All music is folk music. I love writing simple songs and also complicated and dense songs. I enjoy exploring big band arranging and writing 4-part vocal harmonies.

I learned trombone in my high school marching band and I have been in love with the horn ever since. Now that I live in New Orleans, my love for it has only grown. I love working with students to learn the fundamentals by learning their favorite song. Then we approach the horn through a lens of improvising and composition.
Violin

I have been making music with a bow in my hand for over 20 years. I love teaching students of all levels. I enjoy teaching the fundamentals and watching as the student gains confidence in their musicianship. I have a Master's Degree in Jazz Performance and I have spent my life dedicated to music. I specialize in upright bass, violin, viola, and cello.

My mother is a writer and educator and she has been drilling me about writing a convincing thesis since I could talk. Although my Master’s degree is in music, I have years of experience working with students from Pre-K to college level in their pursuits to learn more about language and storytelling.

A tutor who connects to the student

After 9 years with the same teacher and the same songs, my 13 year old son was so bored with violin, he was going to quit. I took a chance and found Wyzant- and had no idea how it worked. Took another chance and chose Grayson. Winner!! My son has had about 5 lessons with Grayson, and he has totally regained the spark and interest in violin. Grayson connected with my son, and violin is fresh and fun again! I highly recommend Grayson as a violin teacher!

Adaptable and great online!

Grayson was able to see my skill level and teach me in a manner that matched what I was looking for. He is adaptable and good at teaching. I was concerned online might somehow make the lesson less interactive than in person, but I was wrong. Great lesson and I will be taking more!
