University of New Orleans (PhD)
Hi! I've been teaching at the University of New Orleans since 2011 while earning my PhD in biology. Part of my duties have been teaching the population genetics lab, and tutoring undergrads in a genetics lab and for various classes. With the help of the main professors, I have reached out to students in danger of failing their courses. One hundred percent of those students who followed through with ongoing tutoring sessions raised their grades to at least a 'C' average.
What I find most rewarding about tutoring and teaching is guiding the students to a point where they make a breakthrough into understanding the material on their own. I excel at one on one interactions, and I am especially good at breaking down complex concepts and making them much easier to understand. Part of why that comes to me so naturally is because I remember learning this material myself. I remember what was difficult and frustrating, so I have a lot of patience and empathy. I look forward to helping the next student out.
I am highly trained in biology. Beyond the terminal degree, I have also worked in research for over 5 years. I bring to the table education, experience, and excitement.
I have been playing the flute for over 30 years. I am an accomplished soloist and have been consistently playing in ensembles throughout the years. I am passionate about all musical genres although my specialty is classical.
With demonstrated success in both science, and the arts, I have a breadth of training from which to draw to make your subject more palatable and understandable. I look forward to meeting you and helping with whatever subject you're stuck in. Hi! I've been teaching at the University of New Orleans since 2011 while earning my PhD in biology. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For starters, I have taken several graduate level statistics courses. Furthermore, my research necessitates the understanding of a wide range of sophisticated statistical modeling methods. To gain better facility, I have read multiple statistics books. It has been an area I've studied in order to better understand and interpret my own research.
I have been seriously playing flute for over 30 years. I have been in the private studios of some of the best flutists across the country. Throughout that time, I have been playing in wind ensembles, orchestras, chamber groups, rock bands, and solo. I currently maintain an active role in the New Orleans Concert Band, and The New Orleans Concert Band Chamber Winds.
I have been working in genetics and molecular biology for nearly 10 years. My MS and my PhD were both population genetic studies of wild animals. I have published at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal, one is pending and two more are in draft. I have designed and executed a next generation dataset, I have designed primers for targeted recapture, I have designed microsatellite multiplexes, and I have routinely used specialized software to conduct sophisticated statistical analyses. Finally, the lab I teach and coordinate is composed of 50% population genetics activities.
