About Alexis

I am a graduate of Tulane University where I received my BS and MS in Neuroscience. During completion of these degrees, I undertook rigorous coursework in mathematics and biological sciences, including courses on the philosophy of science and mathematical modeling. I have extensive tutoring experience and have worked with Sylvan Learning Center, volunteered at local schools as a tutor, and met with students for one-on-one tutoring. I also have a small personal library of education and pedagogy books which run the gamut from elementary to college level instruction from which to pull techniques to benefit students at any level.

My mission statement with each of my students is to create a relationship based around clear communication of strategies and content through an environment that fosters both analytical and creative thinking, while pinpointing both strengths and weaknesses of the individual's approach to learning and tackling their study. Through this, I hope to allow students to build a stronger foundation that will make future learning easier. My greatest joy as a tutor would be for a student to confidently and proudly declare that they no longer need my services, as this would indicate that I have imparted on them not only content knowledge, but also more general skills, strategies, and competence in approaching difficult material.

My GRE score is above the 90th percentile in all subsections, and I have spent time figuring out how to approach common questions on the GRE and increase proportion of correct answers even when unsure of the exact answer.

During completion of my degrees, I took a number of math courses, including Calculus I through III, Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Real Analysis. In my spare time, I continue to study mathematical subjects such as game theory.

As a neuroscience major, I have gained a great deal of experience in reading and analyzing scientific texts and graphics, and have learned to quickly extract the most relevant information and synthesize it with other information in the text in order to answer questions.

Finally, I have spent significant time analyzing my own study skills and learning techniques, and have become familiar with many mnemonic systems which allow individuals to rapidly learn and access large amounts of information. Due to the fact that these systems are not typically taught in educational settings, I do not default to them in typical tutoring sessions, but would be happy to discuss and teach them if a student is interested.

Subjects offered include:
Mathematics, from grade school (basic arithmetic) up to calculus.
Physics
Biology
Test preparation (ACT, SAT, GRE)
Essay/paper critiquing (editing while simultaneously looking at ways to identify writing problems so that future papers will be better)

For GRE students in and near the Uptown area, I would be happy to provide group lessons at a reduced fee per person. If you are interested in group lessons and have friends or acquaintances who may be as well, simply have a someone from the group contact me and we can work out the best plan for group study and learning.

I am also sometimes able to offer tutoring on weeknights from 10PM to 3AM for last minute test preparation for students at Loyola and Tulane. My rate for sessions during this time will increase to $60 per hour. However, if you have a study group, we may be able to arrange a lower rate per hour per student. For such sessions, please be sure to get in touch as early as possible before the desired time, so that I may schedule my evenings accordingly.

If you're not sure whether I can help on a subject, just contact me and I'll let you know if I feel I can perform a competent job and aid you in acquisition of the material that is challenging you. I look forward to helping you do your best.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I scored a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam in high school and have since taken multivariable calculus and beyond.

Chess

I have known how to play the game of chess since I was child, and have studied seriously for the past several years. I am a USCF member and regularly attend meetings of the New Orleans Chess Club. I frequently play in local and state tournaments. I have taught chess as a volunteer at a local elementary school and have also read up on chess pedagogy. In addition, I have many books of theory and exercises to aid in working with students of various skill levels.

GRE

I am a graduate of Tulane University where I received my BS and MS in Neuroscience. And I earned the following GRE scores: (October 2016): Quantitative Reasoning: 170/170, Verbal Reasoning: 170/170, Analytical Writing: 4.5 (improper time management).

Physics

I scored a 5 on the AP Physics exam and have taken multiple physics courses, including Thermodynamics and Modern Physics.

Study Skills

During my undergraduate and graduate study, I spent a good deal of time assessing and completely revamping the way in which I approached and learned material. This included researching methods for efficient reading of technical texts and literature and utilization of study schedules shown effective by empirical research. I have also practiced various mnemonic systems which allow for rapid learning of a wide range of subjects, from historical facts to biology.

Already feeling more confident

Though I have months more of tutoring lined up with Alexis before my GRE I already feel more confident and comfortable. He is very patient, very smart, and very comforting since I am an anxiety ridden math student. I'm so glad I found him to tutor me, he's a gem!
