About Dan

I started tutoring SATs during college to make some extra money while I was studying music. It turns out that I not only had a passion for music but for teaching as well. I love working one-on-one with students, problem-solving, confidence-building, and figuring out what unique approach works best for each student I work with. I remember the challenges of high school and college, and it's part of my job to help students push through them. As a tutor, I think the best approach is positive reinforcement, and I believe that if you're truly committed to doing the work and making an effort, there's no reason a student can't improve on a test or in a class.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the City College of New York in 2013 with a BFA in audio production and a Biology minor. I've been employed as a private tutor in guitar since 2008, in SAT and Biology since 2012, and ACT/Physics since 2013. While I lived in the New York area I was employed by Carnegie Pollak Test Prep. I moved to New Orleans in April 2015 in order to further pursue music, and have continued tutoring privately since moving. Currently I also teach an ACT Math workshop at an after school program called College Track New Orleans, which is a non-profit dedicated to helping students from low-income families get accepted to and graduate from a four-year college. I've tutored students ranging from the third grade through college, and have also worked with students struggling with learning disabilities.

I was never particularly strong in high school math classes. In college, I taught myself a couple of classes in order to place out, which changed my entire perspective on mathematics. This experience gave me a unique perspective on how math is taught in schools, and the difference between textbook learning and really understanding. The way math is presented in the ACT and SAT is unorthodox, forcing students to think outside the box in order to get high scores. I focus on teaching them how to do this with tricks and workarounds that help save time and eliminate wrong answers.

Science is my favorite subject to tutor! I've always loved science both in and out of school, and I try to explain science in a way that relates to real life. With biology, I believe that the key is to understand how life systems work- if a student understands the process, it becomes that much easier to memorize all the vocabulary. Similarly, with Physics, it's important to be able to picture the phenomena before attempting to work through the math. With both of these subjects, I try to maintain why they're important. Learning about how the world works is cool!

The SAT and ACT reading sections are all about budgeting time and learning vocabulary. I focus on practicing reading the sections once through, retaining the information, and learning how to notate sections as you read.

I'm available for sessions of 60 or 90 minutes, and can meet at your home, a library, or coffeeshop. I can be reached reliably through email. Looking forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
