About Brian

As a child of a public school teacher and a public school nurse, I've never been able to escape the education field... even at the end of a school day. Born in Connecticut in 1981 and having attended two high schools simultaneously -- a public school in the suburbs in the morning and a magnet arts school in the inner city in the afternoon and evening -- I ended up with the second-highest SAT II score in the state in 1998, with a near-perfect score in Writing.

I've been a working writer since the age of 15, when I was hired on as a staffer at The Hartford Courant, America's oldest continuous newspaper. After several years in New Orleans and New York working for writers like Stephen Ambrose and Hunter S. Thompson and publishing my own stories with everything from the Guardian to Gawker and AOL.com, I moved permanently back to New Orleans in 2014 to direct a feature film based on my own original screenplay, about education and kids living alone in the 9th Ward.

I've been a professional writer for almost 20 years and have numerous awards, including a top playwriting prize and a rare near-perfect SAT II writing score, among many other honors.

I've hosted radio shows, directed shy actors and nonprofessional children in plays and films, ghostwritten numerous articles and stories, and generally helped endless amounts of people overcome hurdles in writing and reading.

I can't wait to get back into tutoring and education in the greatest city in the world.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
