LSU (English Literatute)
My love for reading and writing led me to major in English Literature during Undergrad. I attended law school and am now a licensed attorney. Because of my love for reading and writing, I naturally enjoy helping children enhance their own reading and writing skills.
While English and Reading are my best subject areas, I can also offer assistance with general science and math areas. I am also a fairly knowledgeable history buff.
I have had a great deal of experience tutoring children of all ages and even a few high school students. However, I tend to gravitate and enjoy tutoring elementary aged children. I have never professionally tutored or tutored in a classroom. All of my students have been either family or family friends. In those cases, I would generally tutor them either at their homes or a local coffee shop. I do not mind if parents are present at the working table, but through experience, find that students are more attentive and focused if their parents are not actually at the table.
I am very patient, yet stern in my tutoring tactics, which provide the student with the ability to develop a comfortable relation with me, but at the same time understand the importance of practice and repetition in order to succeed. I am also quite creative in the methods I utilize during tutoring, such as the ability to relate things to real life and to situations that the student may connect with. On our first meeting, I generally like to get to know my students a little better, asking him or her questions about school, favorite subjects, extra curricular activities, etc. Then I like to speak with the parent to determine where the student is in his or her class and what area/s he or she needs assistance with. I then like to review basic concepts that the student has learned in class to see whether he or she has mastered that topic. I also like to have the student explain to me in his or her own words what he or she interprets the assignment to involve. During that explanation, I usually can determine where there is a disconnect.

MC Was really nice, patience and honest. She took time to talk to us to get a better understanding about the issue may son is having with reading.
She told us that it sound like a little more than just a phonics issue and that she didn't want to take him on as client and couldn't me our expectations. I think MC cares for her clients and their well being.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
