About Kate

I was born and raised in Washington, DC! I earned a BA in Sociology and Latin American Studies at the University of Vermont and then moved to Austin, TX to pursue a wonderful opportunity at Casa Marianella -- a unique nonprofit that serves immigrants and refugees seeking political asylum. After four years in Texas, I moved to Atlanta for a graduate program at Emory University. For better or worse, I'd already caught the "NOLA bug" a few years back, and it wasn't long before I transferred to Tulane to continue my graduate studies -- and to be in the city that had captured my heart.
I earned my MS in International Development in May of 2015 and, in addition to tutoring, I have an internship working with Spanish-speaking populations in and around New Orleans.

I've worked in both Spanish-only and bilingual (Spanish/English) environments. For example, as the Paralegal and Case Coordinator at Volunteer Legal Services (VLS) of Central Texas, I interpreted in court for civil law cases, and I served as the interpreter for the VLS staff attorney and weekly legal clinics. As one of the Assistant Directors at Casa Marianella, I case managed residents and non-residential clients -- work that required Spanish fluency in areas such as healthcare advocacy, legal/immigration matters, and rights issues. I also did one-on-one ESL tutoring for residents and walk-ins. In addition to my professional experience, I've lived and traveled in predominantly Spanish-speaking countries -- Argentina, Colombia, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

Beyond my language abilities, I've acquired excellent writing and editing skills via challenging coursework (at postgraduate level) and work experience.

My MS in International Develop and BA in Sociology and Latin American Studies required a wide range of the interrelated topics that make up social studies.

Last but not least, I have had formal training and professional experience in grassroots community organizing and social justice work.

I look forward to developing a program that meets your or your child's unique needs!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
