About Will

Ni Hao! My name is Will, and I'm a international education professional who just returned from 4 years of living, working and learning in China. I'm a person with a passion for languages. After graduating from Northwestern University in 2012, I moved to China where I worked for IES Abroad, one of the world's leaders in study abroad.

I have three years in the education world tutoring Mandarin Chinese to American students in China. I love to teach - not only Chinese but history and global affairs. The look on a student's face when they 'get it' is the true reward of teaching. I'm passionate about language and I love to share that passion with my students.

I have full working fluency in Mandarin Chinese, as well as proficiency in the Beijing and Yunnan dialects. I've studied Chinese for 8 years from some of the world's best language learning institutions, specifically Northwestern University and Beijing Foreign Studies University, where I completed a post-graduate thesis on China-Burma relations in 2012.

I've worked for 3 years in an all-Mandarin environment and have tutored dozens of American students in Chinese during this time. I know the road to fluency - I've walked it. Using my knowledge of the language and the learning process, I can communicate clear and effective ways to learn the language. I'm a patient teacher who is willing to put in the time to help the student achieve their desired results - I want to help YOU master the language.

Fluency in Mandarin is not easy, but with the right teacher, the right attitude and some hard work, you'll be well on your way. It's my goal to help get you there! Please contact me via Wyzant and we can set up a time to get you or your child on the path to Chinese!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I have studied Chinese for 8 years and have attained full professional fluency in that time. I completed a post-graduate thesis on China-Burma relations at Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2012 and have worked in a full Chinese language environment since then. I've tutored dozens of American students in Chinese while managing a study abroad program in Kunming, China for 3 years. By fully learning the language, I can help new learners by pointing out common mistakes and devising innovative ways to overcome the difficulties of learning Mandarin.

Political Science

I received my BA in political science from Northwestern University in 2012 where I focused on Asian comparative politics. Since then, I've managed a study abroad program in Kunming, China which focuses on China-Southeast Asia relations. I'm also the co-founder and editor of a website that focuses on China's footprint on SE Asia and averages 60,000 visits per month.

World History

I'm a lifelong history learner. In 2012 I graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in political science. There, I focused on comparative politics of Asia. After that I spent 4 years living China running a study abroad program for college students from the US. In the program, I taught seminars and tutored students on regional history as well as the history of colonialism, both in Asia and around the world. Since 2013, I've also run a blog that produces original research and writing on China's relationship with Southeast Asia.
