I'm Shelley, a certified teacher who specializes in reading and math tutoring for Kindergarten through 6th grade. I currently teach first grade in Jefferson Parish. I have a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education, with a special interest in early childhood/elementary reading and literacy. At the end of this school year, my 83% of my students were at or above grade level in reading; 70% of my students were at or above grade level in math.
I get to know each student with whom I work; this includes not only their academic strengths and weaknesses but also their personal interests, whether it be Minecraft, Monster High, or popular music. After initially meeting you and your child and conducting an informal assessment, I'll develop a tutoring plan. I'll share the plan with you and ask for feedback. Then, let the success begin!
I view parents as partners, and your feedback is always welcomed and appreciated.

Shelley is awesome. I can definitely see a change in my son's enthusiasm for learning. She was definitely a great choice.
Shelley has given us clear insight into what my grandson really needs to become a fluent reader. She listens carefully and is very dedicated to helping my grandson accomplish the goal of fluency.
I sought assistance from Shelley for enrichment for my 4 year old. Shelley was very pleasant and she easily connected with my son. She had activities that captured his attention. He had a great time while learning. He was looking forward to his next session.
Shelley is amazing, she had all the materials my son is working on, she was fun and energetic. She kept my son interested, he can't wait to see her again!
She read two books with my son. When he came across a word he didn't know, she showed him how to sound the word out using flash cards
Shelly is a GREAT teacher. Who truly loves her job. My daughter Makayla love her.
Ten stars Excellent. I seat near by and listen to the lesson and my daughter is more confident in her because of Shelley. She so devoted to her job she called my daughter's teacher so they can be on the level. Who does that? But someone who is true to teaching. Makayla, Mommy, and whitie the dog love our tutor.
Shelley was professional and friendly with my daughter. In addition, she also provided me with exercises to do at home.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I work extensively with the Common Core State Standards, writing and teaching lessons aligned to both the English Language Arts and Math standards. I also create weekly subject assessments aligned to the CCSS.
As part of my classroom curriculum, I teach handwriting using the "Handwriting Without Tears" method. I observe and work with students, ensuring they are using a proper pencil grip and writing without tension or pain in their hand.
I have done specialized study in early literacy and language development. This included working with toddlers to school-age children and observing and studying their phonemic and phonological awareness skills.
