Why choose me to tutor your child?

Not all students learn the same way. I know this because I have been teaching for over nine years and because I was not a typical learner. Children benefit from being taught in their own learning style (i.e. visual, musical, kinesthetic). This is sometimes difficult to accomplish in a classroom setting.

Tutors are a great way to ensure that your child has a more specific learning plan that addresses their style of learning and their educational needs. I will work with your child to design this learning plan and help them understand their own learning style.

What qualifications do I have?

I am a Louisiana certified teacher who currently teaches K - 3rd grade. I am certified to teach Elementary Education K-6th grade, Science 6-9th grade, and Social Science 6-12th grade. I have taught Kindergarten and 5th - 8th grade. I have homeschooled, substituted, and tutored adults to read. I have also completed my ESOL Endorsement. In addition, I was an adjunct professor in the film department of my local college for six years. My current teacher evaluations rank me as "Highly Effective."

How do my students do on standardized tests and other performance-based assessments?

The FCAT (a Florida-based standardized test), and other tests like it, are not only about measuring what a student has learned; they are about critical-thinking. Unfortunately, many teachers/schools do not make critical thinking a part of their daily activities. During tutoring, I teach students to deconstruct standardized tests and break down each question using critical thinking strategies. My students' results include an average of a 4.1 (out of 5) on FCAT Writes and significantly outscoring both the state and the district on 6th Grade Math FCATs. In addition, many of my students have moved from a 1 or 2 to a 3 or 4 (out of 5) on the 5th grade Science FCAT. I also help students to overcome test anxiety and lack of confidence by helping to identify issues that they can address through the use of specific strategies.

What if your child hates the subject matter?

I can't think of a subject that is not fascinating in the appropriate context. Students often do not make the connections to their life or the real-world that will help them to appreciate the knowledge they are gaining. This is addressed by my teaching style which includes using real-world issues, places, etc to teach fundamental subjects such as reading, math, science, and writing. I believe critical thinking and problem-solving are the key to engaging students in their own learning. When knowledge is useful people appreciate it and seek it out. If I want a puppy I have to learn to care for it. If I want to play a video game I have to read the directions. Tutoring is the ideal environment to allow students to use project-based learning to increase their skill in a particular subject. If a student is struggling with fractions but loves to skateboard, allow them to mathematically assemble a skateboard or ramp while providing support/guidance with the math concepts throughout the process. Suddenly, "useless" knowledge becomes useful.

Any final thoughts?

I am a unique teacher who sees your child as a whole person that has so much to contribute, not only to their own learning, but to the world. Our educational system is designed for the "average" student, but we all know that each child is an individual and has individual needs. You are trying to provide your child the opportunity to learn in a way that helps them to succeed. Together we can be the best resource for your child to thrive in an academic setting, but also to enjoy learning the skills that will ensure they have the future they envision.
