About Julie

I'm an enthusiastic, methodical tutor with six years of experience. I tutor all ages from seven year olds to college students, and subjects such as social studies, history, English writing and English literature. I also do college and test prep, from activity counseling, to which schools to apply to, to help in application essay writing.

My tutoring philosophy is that every student has the capacity to excel in any subject -- once they discover their unique method of learning. I'm confident that with my help, you'll be sure to succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I studied anthropology in college, where I earned a 3.8 GPA. I have tutored students in the subject, in reading and analyzing theory, making sense of fieldwork, creating their own fieldwork methodologies, and writing anthropology papers which are very nuanced in their requirements of mingling theoretical précis with new information from both fieldwork and posited by the students themselves in a new frame.

Elementary (K-6th)

My specialty is in working with students in K-6th. I am qualified across all subjects: reading, writing, math, science, history and study skills. I worked for Launch Education and One to One tutoring as a K-8 tutor for years, and can show documentation.

Hebrew

I have tutored Hebrew -- language, literature -- in the past. Additionally, I lived in Israel for two years, and did heavy language immersion. I also have extensive knowledge of modern Israeli and Jewish history, which is what this one student is looking for.

Study Skills

My main tutoring experience is helping young students improve their study skills. I've worked for the past three years at Launch Education in this subject. This involves coming up with a system of organization. It also includes targeting their strengths and weaknesses, working slowly with them on annotating text, finding questions to ask their teachers, and slowing down on their reading and answering, and checking for answers!

Writing

MFA in Creative Writing from NYU
5+ years of tutoring experience in paper writing for middle schoolers through college students, grammar and usage, and reading comprehension.
