About Blake

LOGARITHMS!! Your heart rate just spiked, didn't it? DON'T WORRY! No, seriously; stress is the opposite of health.

I'm a neuroscientist/artist, former childhood dancer/gymnast/actress. In high school I was a mathaphobe (afraid of math... though I hated it). I always liked science but never "thought I was good at it" and certainly never dreamed of pursuing it in any way, shape or form.

Speaking of shape and form, that is the very essence of biological science: function follows form!
(It's not rocket science, which by the way, is way more attainable than you think!!)

I fell in love with science via the human body in a community college anatomy & physiology (A&P) course and decided to leave my "job" as a freelance artist/writer and go back to school. I earned a BS in Biology/Chemistry at Salem College, which, established in 1772, is the oldest institution in the United States dedicated to the education of WOMEN! I was even awarded The SMART Grant (The National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant)... a former thinker of the thoughts, "I just don't get math, what does it have to do with me and my life." As it turned out, the answer was literally beneath my feet (its a great/long story that I will happily dish upon meeting).

I began tutoring my peers that were in my A&P class with me (my professor encouraged this and helped me get the paperwork signed by the dean since it was unusual to have a student tutor a course that she was still in!) and found great joy in sharing my newly-found passion. I also worked in the Writing Lab as a writing tutor, as I was on the 2003 Winston-Salem SLAM Poetry Team and am a bona fide member of Poetry Slam Inc.

I believe strongly that anyone with the interest and the will to learn, can.

With an open mind and heart, one may discover as I did, that given the opportunity one can fall in love with and master subjects that had previously seemed out of reach.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
