About Maia

Hi there! I'm Maia, a fifth-grade English teacher here in New Orleans. (However, I was trained to be a high school teacher, and have tutored college students!) I am a graduate of Swarthmore College, a small, rigorous liberal arts college outside of Philadelphia, where I was an Honors English major and an Honors French minor, as well as being a regular Educational Studies minor. English is, of course, my strong point, but I can also tutor many elementary school, middle school, and high school subjects -- having been competent in everything from math to history to philosophy. I'm also extremely familiar with the college application system, including the standardized tests that are (unfortunately) necessary. I've taught both the SAT and the ACT many times before, and am confident that I can teach both tests in a way that helps you do well ("teach to the test") and also helps you actually learn something (teach to the real world)! Most of all, though, I have a genuine enthusiasm for teaching and learning. Hope to see you soon! Maia Hi there! I'm Maia, a fifth-grade English teacher here in New Orleans. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I successfully completed Algebra I in high school. That knowledge stuck with me: I passed the WyzAnt Algebra I certification test. I also successfully tutored a WyzAnt student and helped him get from an F to a B!

I completed an intensive Orton-Gillingham training at the Delaware Valley Friends School in June 2013. As of late July, I have instructed adolescents with dyslexia using the OG method for a total of 83 hours. The Orton-Gillingham method was designed for children with learning difficulties in the realms of reading and writing. It covers phonics, decoding, spelling, and morphology.

My major, my passion, my one true love!

I've tutored ESL five times: once for a native speaker of Spanish, twice for native speakers of Korean, and twice for native speakers of Arabic. Each one of these long partnerships has given me a greater understanding of what the tricky parts of learning English are, and how best to explain them!

As an English major, my grasp on grammar, writing, and vocabulary is more than excellent. At Swarthmore College, I also took a course on Language Minority Education, in which I learned the principles of teaching English to non-native speakers who live in the United States.

I've been taking French classes since I was thirteen years old. My most intense experience with French was the semester I spent abroad in Grenoble, France. I was there for five months, and during those five months I lived with a host family and attended the Université Stendhal. I spoke French at home, at school, and with the friends that I made; I also did all of my academic work entirely in French.

I graduated from Swarthmore College with an Honors Minor in French Language and Literature.

I took Latin all throughout high school, and loved it. I then took a Latin class as an elective in college, but sadly didn't have the time to pursue it any further. Nevertheless, I've continued to read Latin for pleasure on my own time. Latin is one of my favorite things to teach -- it has a "boring" reputation, but you'd be surprised how fun it can be!

I have taught reading comprehension in many capacities -- in the classroom at the high-school level, one-on-one at the middle school level, and one-on-one with children with mild to severe dyslexia.

SAT Math

I have tutored the SAT three times before -- and each time raised my tutee's score! I have been trained as a Kaplan teacher.

SAT Reading

I took the SAT twice; both times I received an 800 on the Reading section. I was trained as an SAT Kaplan Teacher, and have tutored SAT Reading four times before, adapting methods from both Kaplan and the Princeton Review.

As a freelance writer, I am more than familiar with all kinds of writing, from creative to expository (including academic). I graduated from Swarthmore College with a major in English Literature and a concentration in Creative Writing; I was also the editor-in-chief of Swarthmore's nonfiction literary magazine, where I personally had a hand in editing every piece.

I have written a number of short stories, and have taken enough creative writing classes to be very well-versed in all aspects of craft.

Really excellent! — Excellent! She is a wonderful tutor! Her tutoring was really helpful in studying English. I have learned from a lot of tutors so far, however, there was no one who was better than her! I was lucky to meet her! I strongly recommend her to any one who wants to find an English tutor! You will not regret the choice. Especially, she is very strong in English writing. She is also very kind. I loved stud ...
