About Charles

I am semi-retired and spent 40+ years in I.T. Support and I.T. Training. During that time, I wrote (and taught) several computer courses for colleges in New Orleans and Houston. I was a Math/Science teacher in Houston (state-certified) for a few years when the I.T. field had a downturn.

The last 10 years have been spent almost entirely as a Computer Trainer, training students of varied ages at many locations (mostly in Louisiana). I have a love of seeing a student "get it" and take off on their own. I understand the various learning modalities (different students learn different ways) and I am familiar with teaching/tutoring a full class at a time as well as one-on-one.

I started tutoring in High School at the request of my Math teacher, and found that not only do I enjoy it, but the questions that my students have force me to learn even more in Math than I already knew, so we BOTH gain.

At the request of my (11th grade) Chemistry teacher, I was separated from the rest of my class and given several Chemistry books to explore. I found that I had a knack for (inorganic) Chemistry ... it just made sense to me. I then competed in the "Louisiana High School State Rally" competition that year and placed 2nd in my Region and then 2nd in State. (The same student bested me both times.)

I am semi-retired now, and still have a love of my fields (Math, Science, Computers). I would love to be able to continue passing on what I know to others. I work best with students who are motivated; I have to admit that I can not always motivate those who don't WANT to learn. So, if you WANT to learn, I think we can work well together!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring a couple of students in Algebra I and II (outside of Wyzant) over the past year. My educational background as an Electrical Engineer involved extensive mathematics classes in college. I was a Math teacher (4th grade, 8th grade, and 9th grade) several years ago: some at public school, and some at private school. I enjoy tutoring, training, and teaching.

Microsoft Access

I have several Microsoft certifications, dating from 1993 (DOS) through 2014 (Microsoft Office Expert). I have been certified with them since 1993. I can provide my Microsoft Transcript if you wish.

Additionally, I have been teaching Computer Software courses for years, most recently at New Horizons Computer Training Centers since September 2013, where I recently submitted my resignation so that I can enter semi-retirement. Courses I teach there include Microsoft Access 2010 and 2013 courses (both Parts 1 and 2).

Microsoft Outlook

I have several Microsoft certifications; one that is relevant to this evaluation is Microsoft Office Outlook 2007.

Microsoft Windows

I started with micros in the late 1970s, before DOS was even around, and have continued since then in I.T. Support and I.T. Training ever since. I have several Microsoft certifications; some that are relevant to this evaluation are: (1) Windows 7, Configuration; (2) Enterprise Desktop Support Technician on Windows 7; and (3) Enterprise Desktop Administrator on Windows 7. Legacy certifications include DOS, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000.

Courses I teach include Windows 7 and Windows 8 courses. (No, I have not yet upgraded to Windows 10, but I plan to before the end of the year.)

Prealgebra

- (Expired) teaching certification in Math for the state of Texas
- Taught 4th, 8th, and 9th grade Math in Texas schools
- Scored a perfect "800" in the S.A.T. Math test in high school
- Taught I.T. subjects for a cumulative net of about 20 years between 1978 and 2016
