About Lisa

I have 28 years of teaching and tutoring experience in grades 1-8. I have a Master's Degree in elementary education with certification as a reading specialist. I have taught all major subjects in a self-contained classroom, as well as teaching as a school Math Interventionist, and teaching the fourth grade remedial Math LEAP program. I introduced and taught both teachers and students the dynamic English program the Shurley Method, emphasizing grammar and writing.

Tutoring is particularly rewarding to me, as this setting allows me to motivate and develop a positive rapport with my students. I am better able to assess a child's strengths and weaknesses. I can identify specific skill weaknesses and plan remediation. I have a history of success in tutoring many students in all elementary subject areas including handwriting, study skills, and required summer novel reading. I consider myself lucky to be in my profession. I give my best, and I love what I do.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

In my 28 years of teaching and tutoring, I used my skills as a reading specialist to test, diagnose, and plan specific lesson interventions for remediation in math, language arts, science, spelling, and social studies. One example of a remediation lesson for students with poor fluency in reading was using poetry exercises. In math memorization, I used songs rhymes, and cheers. I used movement in teaching my lessons, and I integrated computer applications in teaching the basics of elementary subjects. The students I have tutored in elementary subjects 1-6 made significant improvement in school grades. Students I taught as a math interventionist made significantly higher scores post-intervention. Using the Shurley Method, I have helped even the weakest students in writing and English grammar.

Elementary Math

I have successfully helped many students improve their elementary math skills over the past 28 years of teaching and tutoring. After evaluating a student's strengths and weaknesses, I teach from the specific skill weaknesses and build on strengths and mastery. I always try to build a rapport with the child by being encouraging as possible and by making lessons as enjoyable as possible. Learning can and should be exciting!

Grammar

I truly enjoy teaching grammar skills which are so important to writing. I have had over 28 years of success in helping students with these skills. I use an oral diagramming method to identifying the eight parts of speech in a sentence. I have fun jingles, songs, cheers, etc. (appropriate to age) to learn each part of speech. I help students build on simple sentences to make more difficult ones with correct grammar, I try to make grammar skills exciting to learn.

Handwriting

I have had about 12 years of experience teaching handwriting to 3rd and 4th graders in a self-contained class and about 5 years in a departmentalized class where penmanship was a part of my language arts teaching. Using the "Zaner Bloser" series which teaches letter formation with specific strokes such as overcurves, undercurves, slant, etc., I gave children individual help in cursive writing. I also have tutored children in both manuscript and cursive handwriting using this series and homemade, individualized practice sheets. My teaching/tutoring in this skill included proper holding of a pencil, proper seated posture, slant of paper and using one hand to hold the paper or book and one hand to write. I have had great success in this area.

Phonics

I have 28 years of teaching and tutoring experience in grades 1-8. I have a Master's Degree in elementary education with certification as a reading specialist. I have taught all major subjects in a self-contained classroom, as well as teaching as a school Math Interventionist, and teaching the fourth grade remedial LEAP program.

Study Skills

During my 28 years of teaching, I taught an enrichment program which included teaching a study skills unit to 5th and 6th grade students. This unit included the SQ3R study method - survey, question, read, recite, and review. It included many very specific study skills, which helped the students immensely in planning and using their study time efficiently, as well as the best ways to memorize information, picking out important concepts, use acronyms, minimizing distractions during study time, and much more. I believe I helped students use these skills in many subject areas which led to higher grades and more learning.

Writing

I have had great success teaching and tutoring students writing skills for 28 years. Sometimes I use the model of the "hamburger paragraph" to teach topic, main idea, supporting sentences and more. We can build on this in length, creativity, and whatever the writing assignments requires. The hardest part is usually getting started, So, after brainstorming, I push students to "get something" on the paper. Then, we can work with it, revise and proofread. Writing is an exciting, important skill for life.
