About Laurie

I have a master's in education as well as a varied background in teaching, mentoring and tutoring. Most of my teaching career was centered around small group instruction with students who had weaknesses in reading, writing, or other academic deficits. I taught in Terrebonne, St. Charles and Jefferson Parish.

For the last decade I supervised a children's program in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Our goals were to improve the lives of impoverished children through education, meals, and recreation. I am still active in fund-raising and finding resources for children in Honduras who lack school resources such as shoes, supplies, etc.

I have worked with students in Honduras and the US who are elementary age who needed help with reading, computers, and basic skills in all areas of academic need.

I have completed ESL classes for certification. I love writing. In my work as a graduate assistant I supervised a Writing Across the Curriculum program at Nicholls State.

I love the language. Living abroad for nearly 10 years in a Spanish-speaking country gives me a unique perspective.

I have worked with GED students in the past.

One of my strengths is that I enjoy meeting people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and abilities. I understand that everyone has unique strengths and weaknesses. My desire is to help people reach their full potential.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

In the past, I tutored college students with ACT English skills. I also am proficient in teaching test-taking strategies.

ACT Reading

I teach reading for the ACT.

Bible Studies

I completed a year in Biblical studies at a small Bible college in Tennessee. I am a life-long learner in Bible and theology. I am well-qualified to tutor a student, child or adult in basic Biblical principles.

Dyslexia

I have a master's degree in learning disabilities. In addition, I have taught special education classes in public and private schools for many years helping students with various reading difficulties. Dyslexia is a specialized form of reading disability for which I have trained for extensively.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught students at k-6 level in small group settings for years as a public and private school teacher, specifically for children with identified weaknesses in learning or considered at-risk for reading difficulties.

English

I have a bachelor's in education in English. I am certified by the state of Louisiana.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified English teacher with the state of Louisiana. I have completed all coursework with the state to teach ESL classes.

Phonics

I taught phonics as part of a Title One program in Jefferson Parish, as well as to students deficient in reading skills as a special education instructor.

Reading

I have an M.Ed with a specialty in learning disabilities. Most of my career I worked with children who needed extra help with in specific areas of weakness.

Social Studies

I have a BA in Social Studies Education. I am certified by the state of Louisiana in Social Studies for grades 7-12. I have taught social studies in public and private schools.

Spanish

I lived for nearly 10 years in Honduras. I speak conversational Spanish, and I can help you with communicating in Spanish is used in Latin America. My own experience learning the language as an adult makes me uniquely qualified to understand the struggles of learning a second language as an adult.

Special Needs

I have a M.Ed in Learning Disabilities. I am certified to teach Special Education K-12 in the State of Louisiana. I have several years experience teaching children with special needs such as learning disabilities, behavioral issues, autism, and at-risk behaviors related to hindering academic progress.

Study Skills

As a special educator teacher for many years, I often built in study skills teaching into our small group or individual lessons. I know a variety of methods to improve test-taking and build up study skills. One can use advanced organizers, learn to take better notes by focusing on key words, use oral and reading comprehension strategies, learn how to diagram or draw out answers on paper, make grids and tables for information, etc. Some students use color pens for different themes, or learn to circle key words in passages to make learning less abstract. There are as many ways to study as there are students, as each student learns differently.

Writing

I managed Writing Across Curriculum Lab in Thibodaux, Louisiana as part of graduate assistant job.

I have maintained a blog.
