About Brooke

I have always had a passion for helping people of all ages develop a better understanding of the skills and concepts necessary for academic growth and success. This passion has lead me to receive my Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and pursue a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology that I will graduate with this December. In undergrad and graduate school alike I've have acquired over 300 hours working with people of all ages who struggle with reading, writing, speech, learning disabilities, cognitive and pragmatic impairments, and other communication difficulties.

Other past experiences include tutoring peers in my community while in a high school and working as a 5th grade teacher's aid at the SELU Lab School which consisted of me providing extra individualized help (aka tutoring) to students struggling with course materials.

Throughout my years of studying communication disorders I've learned a great deal about why people struggle with learning language concepts and about how that struggle impacts others skills such as reading and writing. Because of this background knowledge I have been able to help many students improve their English, language arts, grammar, reading and writing skills by identifying the underlining problems and/or misconceptions and then providing them with the information/ knowledge needed to overcome their obstacles.

Through these experiences I've learned how devastating and stressful it can be for adults and children alike to struggle with mastering the skills necessary for them to succeed. I've also learned that patience, compassion, and persistence are all key factors in providing the best quality of support needed to help them achieve their goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

My educational background focuses heavily on supporting individuals with a variety of disorders that affect their ability to learn class material. While earning my Bachelor's degree and working on my Master's in Speech Language Pathology I've worked with many children with ADHD/ADD in an educational setting. I've been able to learn about useful techniques and strategies that help combat the students difficulty to focus in an academic setting.

Dyslexia

My educational background focuses heavily on supporting individuals with a variety of disorders that can impair their ability to learn class material. While earning my Bachelor's degree and working on my Master's in Speech Language Pathology I've worked with several students who struggled with dyslexia in an educational setting. I've been able to learn about useful techniques and strategies that help combat the negative effects that dyslexia has on a student's reading and writing skills.

Proofreading

For my major, I've had to take many classes that focused on the different aspects of sentence structure such as morphology, syntax, phonology, lexicon, and semantics as well as linguistics classes. Additionally, as a grad student I have a ton of experience writing collegiate level papers as well as peer-reviewing/editing my classmates' papers. Finally, as part of my work as an SLP graduate student, I work with students of all ages to ensure that their writing meets academic standards.

Softball

I played softball for 14 years and I've been coaching girls 13 and under for the past 7 years. I began playing softball when I was 6 years old (1995) and played every spring, summer and fall until I was 19 (2009). I was selected to play for the Gonzales Lassie League's All-Star team all 14 years and have Won 2 Pony National Championships. Throughout this time I've played any and all positions, eventually becoming my teams starting pitcher.
