Pepperdine University (JOURNALISM)
Louisiana Tech University (Master's)
I am an online Instructor of History with the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. In the recent past I taught at Buena Vista University in Iowa, and still work as an online instructor for Buena Vista. I have completed training in Online Course Facilitation through the University of Illinois. I have also worked as a Contracts Administrator and Program Manager in government contracts.
I have a certificate as an ESL tutor from Literacy Volunteers of America, and have tutored Korean and Mexican students for LVA.
My students and administrator at Buena Vista have complemented me on an ability to make history a fascinating topic for study; not an easy thing, given the field’s traditional reputation with many students. Student evaluations for a course recently completed for Buena Vista University were generally in the “Outstanding” range.
During my undergraduate program at Pepperdine University I completed a required minor in Political Science, emphasizing International Relations. I have also completed graduate course work in Asian and Russian History and have taught Asian Civilization and History. This is building upon an area I initially studied within the framework of communist societies and politics while at Pepperdine.
In my recent position at Iowa Central Community College, many of my courses were broadcast over the Iowa Television Networks.
I have experience teaching a variety of foreign students and American minorities. This experience was garnered not only in the college classroom but also from my days as a literacy tutor at Camp David Gonzalez in California, and an ESL tutor for the Literacy Volunteers of America program at Centenary College.
On a personal note, I was born in Long Beach, California of parents whose roots were in Louisiana and the Southeast. I am one-quarter Amerindian and Spanish, with Tejano ancestry (Caddo) from Sabine County of east Texas on my mother’s side, French Creole ancestry on my father’s side.
I am looking forward to future exchanges. I am an online Instructor of History with the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked as a music critic in the past. I was involved in the production of three different music-oriented television programs in the Los Angeles area. In this line I have interviewed musicians in the genres of jazz, classical and popular. I used to produce a newsletter about the recording industry. I have included sections of text on music in chapters on the arts that I have written for my books on American History and Louisiana History.
I have taught various courses in religious studies. This has been done at both the 2 year college level and the 4 year university level. The courses taught have included "Religious Experience" and the "History of Religion." As a student in college I completed courses entitled "Science and Religion" and "Psychology and Religion."
