Education and Experience
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Nicholls State University in 2006 with a dual degree in history and English literature. Soon after graduation, I secured a position in China at Shanxi University of Finance and Economics. I arrived in China with little teaching experience, but by the time I had left seven years later, I had amassed a rich resume full of various teaching experiences. My last position was at one of the top Chinese International Schools in Beijing--The High School Attached to Capital Normal University--where I taught Chinese students whose main objective was to enter top ranking US universities. In between my first and last job, I worked at various private schools, such as Mercan English, where I taught students of all ages and needs. Additionally, and most rewarding for me, I enrolled as a full-time student in Shanxi University's language and culture program until I became fluent in Mandarin.
Various employment positions have required me to teach a host of subjects. At the university level, I taught classes ranging from oral English, business English, American literature, American culture, and English music. At Mercan, I taught oral English to K-12 students, but my primary focus, however, was as a VIP teacher, where I designed and taught one-on-one classes for students preparing for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT/ACT or university and visa interviews. My primary focus for IELTS and TOEFL was helping students increase their writing and speaking scores. As an instructor at HSACNU, I developed and taught literature and writing, with a primary focus on helping students better understand and emulate the western thought and writing process. I also designed an extremely popular personal statement writing component that guided students in crafting exceptionally intriguing personal statements that helped land them in some of the big name American universities. After returning to the U.S., I became a substitute teacher in the Terrebonne Parish School System, where my primary duty is to teach social studies courses for absent teachers.
In a one-on-one situation, I begin by assessing the student's goals, needs, and abilities before deciding on the best course of action to help them achieve their objectives. I set high standards for my students and push them extremely hard to help them realize their potential. I am enthusiastic in my approach and delivery and work hard to engage my students in both the learning process and in forging their own enthusiasm toward the subject matter. Education and Experience

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My degree is in history. I took various advanced level courses in this subject area.
