I have been in the teaching profession for more than 30 years. In those 30+ years, I have taught nearly every age-group in various arenas. For most of these years I have taught Bible and Christian Studies as a pastor in the local church and as a missionary on the international mission field. In recent years, I have had the opportunity to teach 9th grade World Geography, 7th grade History, and 5th through 8th grade Math in a private Christian school. In the 2016 - 2017 school year, I will be teaching 5th and 6th grade Math at a private Christian school.
Math is my favorite subject to teach. The emphasis on process, procedures, and practical operations are easily applicable to other areas of learning and to real life. I love those moments in teaching math when the "complicated and complex becomes clear" and the student is able to do what he previously found difficult. It has been most often in the classroom that I have had these occasions.
The beauty of individualized instruction is that there are fewer distractions, and the uninterrupted time provides a greater ability to work through difficult concepts and skills with the learner. This learning arena also gives the instructor time to assess any needs of the student that might not be seen as clearly in the context of a full classroom. Finally, study skills can also be assessed and addressed, if there are obvious deficiencies.
I have experience in tutoring math to honor students who simply want to keep pace with their class, to students who need to catch up due to illness or other long-term absences, to students who are struggling to grasp new concepts and skills presented in class, and to students with profound learning disabilities. My experiences in teaching from the perspective of the learner have given me the ability to make the necessary adjustments to learning style so that my instruction is both personal and effective.
I consider it a privilege to tutor and am thankful that you would trust me to help you improve in your study of math. I look forward to providing instruction that will meet your individual needs. Rate is based on 1 student for 1 session. Tutoring multiple students would reduce the hourly rate, depending on the circumstances and length of session.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently teach 5th and 6th Grade Math at Ascension Christian Elementary and have taught 7th Grade Math in the same school system. I have experience tutoring students who have learning disabilities, students who are coming off of lapses in schooling due to major medical issues and need to catch up, and students who are simply struggling to grasp the current math lessons.
