Hi, my name is Tiffany. I am from Lafayette, but currently live in Washington Parish, where I work as a substitute teacher. When my children were young, I home schooled them for 2 years before putting them in public school so that I could work full time. I then became a substitute teacher for Acadia Parish and worked there for 2 years. At that point, I went and obtained my paraprofessional certification and began working for Lafayette Parish. During that 3 year period, I worked at Lafayette's alternative school as a Highly Qualified Special Ed Paraprofessional. Although I loved my job at the alternative school, my family and I moved to Washington Parish, where I have since been working as a substitute teacher.
I have had the pleasure of working with children of all ages, needs and abilities. Some of my time as a para was spent working in the Connections Program, where I helped over aged 8th graders learn the skills they needed to pass the LEAP test. What I love most about working in education is the satisfaction I get from teaching a student a new skill or helping them fill in the gaps for skills that they haven't yet mastered. Students are proud of themselves once they have conquered a challenging skill and with each success they grow more confident in their abilities, which is something children very much need. My favorite subject is Math. I love solving problems and teaching students how to solve them on their own, and I also love teaching Reading, Phonics and Vocabulary. I believe that if a student can understand and master the skills in Math and Reading, then they can excel in any subject. I also love learning and believe in a never ending pursuit of knowledge.
I love Math! The more you enjoy something, the better you will be at it!
I love to read! Reading for fun extends your vocabulary and helps build grammar skills.
I have years of experience working with mentally and physically handicapped children. Most of the children I have worked with have had behavioral and academic troubles. I have a lot of patience and am very good at relating to the children and creating relationships with them, which allows the children to be comfortable and helps them learn.
I am available during most week days approximately from 8-2, depending on where your location is. I am not usually able to tutor during the summer and school holidays. If your child needs help with a skill that I am not familiar with, I will do my best to learn all that I can in that subject so that I can better teach your child and further my knowledge base. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
