Dear potential students,

I am a former homeschool mother of two. I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from University of New Orleans. I have worked as a substitute teacher in the elementary and middle school grades. I have also worked as a teacher's assistant.

My experience in teaching comes from working with children in grades Pre-K through 6th. While I was homeschooling my two daughters, I taught them 1st through 6th grade using the Abeka curriculum. I am able to teach all subjects in the elementary through middle school grades. I especially enjoy teaching math, spelling, reading, and phonics.

My approach varies depending on the student's needs and his/her learning style. My aim as a tutor is to encourage students every step of the way, build their confidence, and lay the foundations for a deep and lasting understanding of the subject.

Common Core

Teaching children, whether in a homeschool setting or in a school setting, should be focused on their strengths. Common Core is used in the school setting to ensure that children are being taught the same material at each school and each grade level. The Abeka curriculum that I used surpassed Common Core standards.

I worked in a school system for two years as a teacher's assistant and as a substitute teacher. I homeschooled my two daughters for four years. I taught 1st through 6th grade at home using the Abeka curriculum.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

I taught my first grade daughter script writing. It was easy and enjoyable for both of us. Practicing script by using different mediums can be very enjoyable and educational.

Homeschool

Using a homeschool curriculum like Abeka was very beneficial to me. Their curriculum was full of teaching techniques and time management skills. Games were also introduced as part of the learning process, especially when working on math and spelling.
Phonics,

Phonics

I taught Phonics for my daughter in 1st and 2nd grade. We used Abeka's program and utilized their flash cards for over 100 sound combinations. Getting a good grasp of phonics is essential to becoming a good reader.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Time management and study skills are essential at all grade levels. Using effective memorization techniques and working on test-taking strategies can help improve focus and grades. During college I always started with homework that was the most difficult for me so that I could have that sense of accomplishment at the end.
