If you are looking for an engaging teacher who can give you or your child fast and effective results in Literature and Composition at the Middle or Secondary School Level, look no further!
I bring 38 years of classroom experience, expertise and dependability to the job. I have taught students from the 8th grade to the 12th grade in both literature and composition. I have also taught Honors Classes on the same levels as well as Advanced Placement courses in Literature and Language Composition.
For the last 38 years, I have divided my career between Brother Martin High School in New Orleans and St. Paul’s School in Covington, two Catholic institutions renowned for the quality of their education and the accomplishments of their students. In my years at these schools I have been part of an evolving and changing curriculum, and have proven extremely adept at preparing students for their entrance into college and the world beyond.
The reason for this is my love of the job.
I enjoy teaching: I enjoy engaging my students. I have a passion for literature that I have always managed to share with them, from the dark asides of a melancholy prince who wishes he were “a little less than kin and more than kind” to the joyous awakening inspired by the dust of snow dropped by a crow in winter. I have a familiarity with the materials of my subject that comes only from a love of exploring literature’s journeys again and again, from the classic voyages of the wild and defiant Odysseus to the gloomy travels of a young Marlow steaming slowly towards the heart of darkness at river’s end.
And I enjoy writing: all my life I have been a writer, choosing words, spinning sentences and unraveling page after page of material in an almost comical quest for publication, a quest measured by the sheer number of personal rejections from some of the most prestigious magazines in the nation. Where so many students and even adults see writing as a chore, I find a joy of expression and that I have shared with my students again and again for over 38 years.
It is my passion for sharing these twin worlds of literature and composition with my students that I would bring to you or your child’s studies if I were given the opportunity to teach them.
Here's what one student had to say:
"Had [Andre L.] for 11th and 12th grade English... Couldn't write a coherent essay at beginning of 11th grade year (August,1998)... Was writing professionally by October of 1999 (12th grade - senior year), working part-time as a sports stringer and occasional feature columnist for a local biweekly print media publication.
Job highlights included interviews with (now) Los Angeles Lakers point guard Chris Duhon and former Baltimore Ravens kick returner BJ Sams while the two were attending Salmen and Mandeville High Schools, respectively.
Obviously, the man played an integral role in the development of a skill which has been central to my career."

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
