I have taught grades one, two, and three, full-time for 14 years. I have also tutored reading and writing in grades up to 5th. My strengths and love of teaching lie in helping students achieve independence in reading and writing. These subjects are the foundation for success in all academic endeavors. The importance of mastering both cannot be understated. I will pre-assess the student's reading and/or writing level in order to ensure that I know the strengths and weaknesses. I will design all lessons around this and all subsequent assessment results. I will also design lessons with the student's preferred learning styles in mind. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy.
I love opening up the world of reading and writing to elementary-grade students, and setting them on the road to a lifetime of literacy success. I believe strongly that tutoring can help to fill the gaps in the knowledge and skills a child needs to be academically successful. I understand "how words work" in both reading [figuring unfamiliar words out] and writing [spelling], and the importance of acquiring new vocabulary. A student cannot read on grade level without being able to understand what's being read.
As a teacher, I know how to challenge students without overwhelming them. Most importantly, I engage students in order to keep them motivated to learn. I design my lessons based on the student's assessment data so that they are learning what they need to learn in accordance with the core curriculum expectations for the grade.
I love children, see all children as bright, and know how to make a child feel good about her or his accomplishments. My goals are to determine what each student needs, and design lessons accordingly.
I have worked with students who have been a grade or two behind in phonics, thus below grade level reading and writing. These students have ultimately progressed to their current grade level benchmark with extra instruction. The key to this success is learning how letters and sounds "work" together. I have also helped teaching professionals strengthen their lessons by demonstrating how to identify and reteach specific skills.
I would love the opportunity to help your child improve in reading and/or writing, thus enhancing her or his academic success. Please contact me with any questions. The location for tutoring can be determined at a later time. I have taught grades one, two, and three, full-time for 14 years. I have also tutored reading and writing in grades up to 5th. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach common core subjects such as reading, writing, and math for the following reasons:
I have taught for 14 years in a traditional public classroom. The last 4 years I have designed my lessons to reflect the new common core standards.
I understand fully that common core lessons include more rigor for the student, as in effective questioning techniques. A good educator understands the importance of these elements in student preparation for success. I have strong experience in preparing lessons that meet the common core requirements and in delivering those lessons effectively.
I have taught all subjects in grades 1 through 3 and for 14 years. These subjects are math, reading, writing, science, social studies, health, phonics and grammar. I have written curriculum in reading and writing to bring it up to common core standards. I have designed differentiated lessons that reach all types of learners and assessed the students' work to determine mastery. My lessons have always been data-driven.
