Louisiana State University (Studio Arts)
I have been teaching in a school setting for 22 years, and have taught private art classes for 30 years. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts with a Minor in English. My art classes typically included reading-for-information and writing assignments, as well as spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. Many lessons were cross-curricular, encompassing the subjects of geography, social studies, history, science, and music. I utilized a variety of resources to aid me in developing my own curriculum, which was modeled after some of the highest education standards in the nation.
My previous tutoring assignments have been with students at the school where I was employed as an art teacher. Using art and/or craft projects as a motivator, I would assist students with comprehending the subjects they were having difficulty with. It was quite rewarding to see students finally grasp a difficult concept, or comprehend a reading assignment. The art projects were fun, yet often challenging, and were stress-free, as there was no grade attached.
Not only have I been incorporating reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary in my art lessons for over 20 years, I have for the past 8 years served as Public Relations Director at the school where I taught. This position required me to write articles about school events on a regular basis, and to write an annual school profile highlighting improvements at the school. I am an avid reader of a variety of genre, and I read critically. I have also written, edited, and published a fantasy novel.
I particularly enjoy working with students in grades 3-8, and the excellent rapport--the mutual respect and friendly atmosphere--that developed with my students made it much easier for us to communicate with each other. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BFA degree in Studio Arts, and have been a practicing artist for over 30 years. I taught private beginner drawing and painting classes to children for 25 years, taught art in elementary school for 22 years, and have taught at summer art camps for the past 8 years. Several private students have gone on to obtain degrees in art.
I have a minor degree in English, and am a published author of a novel for middle school students. In my art classes at a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, writing, grammar, and vocabulary were a part of my art curriculum.
With a minor in English and related subjects, and years of teaching experience, I am skilled in aiding students to a higher level of reading comprehension. Through modeling how to extract information from passages that are of interest to the student, I am able to teach students how to extract information from material that may not be as interesting, in other words, building their comprehension skills and study skills.
