About Sarah

As a graduate student and a former public school music teacher, I've worked with students of all ages in music. I graduated summa cum laude, and received professional status and tenure in my teaching appointment. I spent my Masters as a teaching assistant in aural skills, choir, and music theory, and consistently receive positive evaluations from my students. I have successful experience with groups and individuals.

I specialize in teaching/tutoring music theory and aural skills at all levels, as well as beginner lessons in piano and beginner-through-intermediate lessons in voice. I meet students at their ability level, providing a focus on Western classical technique as well as forays into other styles of music based on interest. I individualize each lesson based on my students' age, strengths, and learning preferences. My goals are to not only have a fun, interesting, and productive lesson, but to provide my students with techniques and tools to practice efficiently and enjoyably.

I have a flexible lesson schedule, though I do require 24-hours notice of cancellation. Students receive appropriate homework or practice activities to complete prior to the next lesson, and we keep track of achievements throughout the lessons.

I am able to teach in my home in Baton Rouge, and am also available to travel and teach at another more convenient location for you.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you/your student achieve your musical goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory (summa cum laude), and have served as a Teaching Assistant in collegiate ear training classes for a total of three years. I am currently completing a Master of Music degree, including coursework on Theory Pedagogy. I have experience tutoring individual students in our undergraduate ear training curriculum, and am familiar with many different methods of teaching and learning this subject.

General Music

I have a Bachelor of Music degree (summa cum laude) and am currently completing my Master of Music degree, both of which require an in-depth and broad knowledge of the field of music. In addition, I have four years of public school teaching experience as a General Music teacher.

Music History

I have a Bachelor of Music degree (summa cum laude) and am currently completing my Master of Music degree, both of which require an in-depth and broad knowledge of Music History. I also have four years of public school teaching experience as a music teacher, where I consistently incorporated Music History content into our music classes.

Piano

I've taken private piano lessons for 12 years, with an additional three semesters of private university study. I tested out of the entire four semesters of required piano for my Bachelor of Music degree, and have sufficient skill to accompany the choirs I've directed in rehearsal and performance. I've served as an accompanist for children's musicals, and I've taught beginning keyboard as part of my four years of public schools music teaching experience.

Sight Singing

I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory (summa cum laude), and have served as a Teaching Assistant in collegiate ear training classes for a total of three years. I am currently completing a Master of Music degree, including coursework on Theory Pedagogy. My tutoring experience in these classes has largely been dedicated to sight-singing work, teaching beginners to sight-sing, and assisting students in preparation for exams.

Voice (Music)

As a choral conductor in both public schools and graduate school, I've taught "group voice" for many years to students of all ages and levels. My Bachelor of Music degree was concentrated in voice, and I've studied voice performance, diction, and vocal pedagogy at the undergraduate and graduate level. I have a variety experience working with individuals, small groups, and large groups of singers on technique, reading music, and performing different styles of repertoire.
