Hi there! My name is Shira and I recently graduated magna cum laude from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. At Tulane I received a dual degree -- a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance, and a minor in Jewish Studies. I specialize in tutoring elementary and middle school students in all subjects.
I have been informally "tutoring" peers my whole life, and formally tutoring for the past 3 years. I have found that my simple, non-intimidating way of relating information has been extremely successful. I believe that all subject matters can be understood if explained patiently.
I am the 2019 recipient of the following awards:
Sarah I. Nadler Memorial Award in Music
Ephraim Lisitzky Memorial Award for excellence in Jewish Studies
Inaugural Trublood Award in Music
I have tutored elementary and middle school students in all subjects -- from writing and grammar, to math and science. I have experience working with typical students as well as students with learning disabilities (including but not limited to: ADHD, dyslexia, sensory processing disorders, and others).
I have worked with elementary students consistently for the past 3 years. Students I have worked with have shown significant growth in their school work.
I feel that my personal academic strengths lie in the realm of English and the Language Arts. I scored a 35 on the ACT in both the English and Reading sections.
I have an extensive grammar education, and have served as a grammar editor for a student newspaper as well as a peer grammar reviewer for school papers.
I am passionate about learning. It is said that the most successful people in life possess unshakeable confidence. It is my belief that the most meaningful confidence is rooted in ability to learn, ask questions, and attain knowledge.
