About Shannon

Are you a parent of a struggling elementary or middle school reader? You are not alone. So many children struggle with reading, but your child can be successful! I would be glad to come along side you and your child on this reading journey as we take one step at a time toward victorious reading.

My teaching background, certification, and education lend itself to your child's success. As a previously certified elementary school teacher with an ESL certification and a Bachelors degree, I taught reading, writing, spelling, and language arts for several years. I also tutored struggling readers and writers, with and without IEPs, after school. In addition to this, I also taught test taking skills to better prepare students for state standardized testing. But after several years of teaching, my husband and I started a family and I quit teaching to stay home with my children. Now that they are much older, I have decided to step back into teaching by just tutoring for now.

Should you decide that you'd like to partner with me to help your child become a successful reader, I ask that you stay with us during the entire tutoring session so that you can see your child's progress. I will supply all teaching materials, and I welcome any teacher-graded materials that may need to be reworked if it applies to your child's success. Other than that, I like to meet at libraries so we have a quiet atmosphere to work in. And when we meet, we'll have a short greeting time so everyone can get comfortable, and then I'll assess where your child is at in his/her reading ability. I want you to see how your child is performing first hand. After that, we'll discuss how your child performed, I'll answer any questions, and then we'll set a goal of where we want to see your child progress to. At that time we'll set a workable, reasonable schedule that will best help us achieve those results.

If your child is a beginning reader, we'll tackle letters and sounds (phonics). Within a short time, we'll have your child reading sentences (word calling). Then we'll advance to comprehension of sentences and then paragraphs. If your child is a more advanced struggling reader, we'll check their reading foundation and build from there into the more complex areas of reading such as comprehension, setting, plot, characters, main ideas, supporting sentences, etc.

We'll also find out what your reader is interested in and help him/her begin to explore different genres of reading (fiction, nonfiction, mystery, biographies, newspapers, comics, etc). This will help grow their love of reading, but it will also provide me the opportunity to teach them how to read these different genres. We'll explore maps, timelines, charts and graphs and learn some test taking skills along the way to victory.

A fluent reader can tackle anything, so why not consider giving them a boost. Your child can be successful! Don't give up too soon. If your interested in working together to get your child reading successfully, then let me know.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

As a previously certified elementary school teacher, I taught grammar and language arts. I am very familiar with sentences, verb tenses, comparative and superlative adjectives, parts of speech, and punctuation. Subject/verb agreement is also very familiar to me. I am also very familiar with the editing process as it is mostly grammatical errors that need fixing when a child is writing.

Phonics

As a previously certified elementary teach who taught reading, I am very familiar with phonetic sounds. I teach people to read using phonics to decode words. And by teaching phonics first, decoding words becomes extremely easy. Then the student has no need to guess at words when reading. In addition to this, phonics helps to teach children how to spell!

Reading

I was a certified teacher that taught elementary reading and language arts for several years. After having children, I chose to quit teaching in a public school setting, and I begin to homeschool. Since my children have grown older, I have decided to begin tutoring other children and youth at this time.

Great Tutor

Shannon is very knowledgeable, my son and I meet with her at the Library where she helped my 8 year old in reading comprehension. I would recommend her for anyone needing assistance. We look forward to the our next session.
