About Katie

Struggling to learn a new concept can be hard, and that leads to frustration. Don't be frustrated! Sometimes all it takes to learn a new thing is having it explained from a new perspective by someone who loves the subject as much as you hate it. I am a professional writer with perfect reading and near perfect writing scores in the English section of the ACT. I taught drama to children and teenagers for four years and loved every minute of it. I absolutely love taking people who think that they're too shy or not talented enough and proving to them that all it takes to own the stage or conquer the blank page is a smile, good posture, and a little self-confidence.

I am 26 years old, and an English Literature major at Northern Kentucky University. I was homeschooled my whole life, which gave me the rare quality of believing I can learn, do, or teach anything. In addition to my addiction to the English language in all of its forms I also play harp, guitar, piano, and sing competently. I am a songwriter (both lyrics and words) and I've devoted innumerable hours to mentoring my friends in creative writing, poetry writing, and song writing.

I scored a 28 composite score on the ACT with 33 in English and 36 (perfect score) in Reading. I'm the published author of a series of pulp-fiction books called "Supervillain of the Day."

I believe that learning should be fun, and as such there is no single formula that can be applied to everyone. You're a unique individual with your own learning pace and obstacles to overcome, and you deserve someone who can help you figure out what that is and work within it. Let me know what you're struggling with, and together we'll find a way to slay that particular dragon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have had Public Speaking from Gateway-KCTCS and Creative Expressions from Northern Kentucky University in the last year. I am on Gateways intercollegiate speech and debate team. I have several years' experience as a public performer and presenter, including being a part of the speaker series at Geek Media Expo in 2014, and a panelist at MidAmeriConII (Kansas City, 2016), LonCon3 (London, 2014,) and PandoraCon (Cincinnati, 2015.)

Theater

I taught children and youth theatre for four years under the mentorship of Edward Sakowicz, who holds a masters in children's theatre from Murray State University and taught me everything I know. I successfully directed a student production of the Greek tragedy Antigone. The girl I cast in the lead was initially unconvinced she was good enough to play the role, and later went on to become a top student and win a regional scholarship. My second directing accomplishment was a full-scale production of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" by C.S. Lewis which included a cast of forty children, teens, and adults and was performed at the local vaudeville theatre and brought in about five hundred audience members.
