About Dustin

I have a desire to see student's succeed. My passion stems from a love for learning and love for seeing others go beyond where they thought they could go. I truly believe that people are capable of much more than they think. I have extensive experience with student's with special needs, however, I enjoy working with any student.

Tutoring allows a student to receive the one-on-one attention they need to excel and either catch up, get ahead, or master a skill. I love getting to know student's and making the learning process fun and exciting. I am currently employed as a special educator in Jefferson County where I hope to continue my career.

I love sports, ice cream, spending time with my wife and son, and education.

I have extensive training in biblical studies, English, and science. My undergraduate work was a degree in theology. I have served as a minister in two churches. I lead student ministry in Cleveland, OH for four years and am now working as a worship director at a local church in the Louisville area. With regards to English, I love short stories and showing students that reading is fun, exciting, and empowering. I have copious amounts of experience writing papers at the Master's level as well. I truly believe that words have power and want students to see that as well. In addition to Language Arts, I also have experience with Geometry and Algebra 2. I am currently teaching mid to upper level math and collaborate with numerous professionals with regards to math instruction.

Over the past 2-3 years, I have worked as an assistant in a highly restrictive environment at a local mental hospital, a self-contained EBD room at a local high school, and am currently a certified teacher in a learning disability class at my high school. Furthermore, my Master's focus is in special education with a concentration learning and behavior disabilities from preschool to twelfth grade. I have a great rapport with administration at my current school and love the opportunity to work with students with challenges.

I would truly love the opportunity to help any student succeed. If you are looking for help after school, want to master a skill or just prepare yourself to succeed now and in the future, please contact me to learn more and schedule a lesson. I would love the opportunity to help you grow and succeed today for a brighter tomorrow.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have 6 years of ministry experience. I served with middle and high school students and their families from 2009-2013. I studied at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary as well, where I majored in church ministries. I have 4 classes left for this degree. I am also serving as a worship director at a local church in the Louisville area. I have training in missions, preaching, and biblical interpretation. I have had numerous mentoring relationships with students over the years (with parent permission). I truly love seeing students understand the Bible.

Guitar

I have been playing the guitar since my freshman year of college. I have since used the guitar to lead worship for numerous churches. I currently am the music leader at a local church in the Louisville area. I have experience helping students learn to play the guitar and enjoy it. I tailor all lessons to the students desires. I have experience in acoustic settings, small venues, and larger venues as well.

Reading

I currently teach English to a group of struggling readers at the high school where I work. We take our time and use strategies that are proven to help students read and comprehend. I have a few years experience helping students achieve their best and want to continue doing that inside and outside the classroom setting.

Special Needs

I have nearly 3 years of experience working with students with disabilities. I worked at a local mental hospital with students suffering with severe mental disabilities ranging from traumatic brain injury to autism to severe emotional disorders. This experience has opened my eyes to the need for trained special educators with patience and compassion. My Master's degree (which will be done in December 2016) is in learning and behavior disorders in grades P-12 from the University of the Cumberlands. I am currently a certified special educator working at a high school in Jefferson County Public Schools. I have an extensive network of other teachers who I can seek counsel from when needed. It is important for students to be taught patterns, study skills, and strategies that are memorable and repeatable. This ensures success in applying skills learned to various content areas.
