About Diane

As a mother of triplets (recently accepted to Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, and the United States Naval Academy) and former teacher (with a Masters degree in Elementary Education), I hold a great passion for knowledge and learning.

From my extensive experience both inside the classroom and one on one, I find academic success is founded on a strong understanding and mastery of fundamental skills, beginning at a young age. With many children, the accomplishments achieved in the future are only made possible by fully appreciating the complexity of education as a process. Often this idea is overlooked in schools, resulting in confusion regarding simple topics, or a diminished work ethic. My creative, direct tutoring style seeks to remove this confusion and/or lack of motivation in younger children, so they might face their futures as stronger students.

I specialize in elementary education, especially grammar, phonics, and math. My highest goal for each session is to help the child reach his/her full potential. I keep the student challenged and engaged, but not overwhelmed. I assign homework based on the student's own workload and personal circumstances. I do, however, always encouraged practice, and believe that it is a necessary part of the learning process.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

During my schooling, I was trained in both classical education techniques and common core techniques. I have taught at several public schools in California that employed the common core method. I have learned from extensive experience the good and bad points surrounding common core and utilized the good points to aid in the education of my students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a masters in elementary education from the University of West Florida. I taught elementary education for almost a decade, in both public and private schools around the United States. I also have a deep understanding of international education techniques from traveling with my husband, a navy pilot.

Handwriting

As an elementary educator, I have focused on both practical handwriting and cursive handwriting. As a teacher, I worked extensively with my children on the proper holding of a pen and pencil, on tracing the alphabet, and on later tracing cursive letters. I believe religious practice is the best, and fastest way to improve and perfect handwriting.

Phonics

As an elementary education teacher I have seen first hand the importance of phonics in building a strong vocabulary. As a teacher who often focused specifically on reading, I have noted phonics also aids in an increased reading ability at a young age. Phonics also helps young children to move beyond memorization and focus on the roots of words.

Study Skills

As a teacher and mother I have discovered that different students approach studying different ways. Some children prefer to complete all homework at once, while others perform better when studying at brief intervals. At a young age, I encouraged my children to complete written homework first and later complete mental studying. I found as a teacher that completing written homework first, before mental studying, helped to reinforce fresh concepts learned at school that day. I also discovered over time that children need help and encouragement with the memorization of concepts through games, flash cards, self made tests etc.
