About Rob

I am a former math teacher and an expert in all levels of mathematics through AP Calculus. I have a Master's degree (M.A.T. in Secondary Mathematics) from the University of Louisville. I worked for 11 years teaching high school mathematics to a broad range of students, from "At Risk" students struggling with Algebra 1, to AP Calculus students preparing for studies in college level mathematics. The specific courses I taught were: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus. I have tutored both privately, and also in the tutoring department at Jefferson Community and Technical College. This work included many adult learners as well as traditional college students.

I love mathematics and enjoy helping students overcome their logical hurdles as they advance through more challenging subjects. When I was a college student, I tutored for extra money in the school math lab, helping students on a walk-in basis. I often received positive feedback and comments such as "It's so easy when you explain it like that!" or "I wish my professor could explain things like you do." It makes me feel great to help people when they really need a confidence boost and some clear instruction.

Mathematics can be intimidating, but that doesn't mean it needs to be impossible or unenjoyable. Tutoring is a way to help people; everyone hits the "math wall" at some point. Even the most skilled mathematicians eventually encounter problems that challenge them to the extreme. I love putting difficult ideas into easy to understand terms. I also love seeing the lightbulb turn on when the student gets it.

I am an expert in a wide variety of math subjects. I know, not only what a student needs to know now, but also where it is leading. I can help them in a way that prepares them for years to come as they continue to study mathematics.

I would describe my two main strengths as the following:
1) I am able to take complicated subjects and ideas, and cut through all the complication to make the core concepts much easier to understand. Once that is achieved, the student is better prepared to handle difficult problems, and their comfort level is much higher.
2) When a student is advanced, I love to help them extend concepts into the next level, getting them to think abstractly about the concept and form generalizations. Watching a natural thinker take an idea and run with it is wonderful. I can answer questions and offer guidance when the student begins to wonder and ask "what if...?"

Helping struggling students gain a clear understanding, and helping advanced learners take their next steps, are the heart and soul of tutoring. Those are things that I enjoy and that I am very good at.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 at the high school level for eight years. I have extensive experience tutoring basic algebra for both children and adults. I have a M.A.T. in teaching secondary mathematics from the University of Louisville, which encompasses Algebra 1.

Algebra 2

I have taught Comprehensive, Honors, and Advanced Program Algebra 2 for several years at the high school level. I am an expert instructor in both a traditional approach to Algebra 2 as well as CPM Algebra 2. I have an expert understanding of the Algebra 2 curriculum, as well as where that material fits in from a vertical alignment perspective. In addition to formally teaching multiple Algebra 2 courses, I have tutored this content in after school ESS settings, college math lab settings, and in private tutoring.

Geometry

I have taught Honors and Advanced Program Geometry courses for several years. In addition to the traditional approach to Geometry, I am also experienced with a variety of techniques to teach Geometry content such as using manipulatives and technology such as Geometer's Sketch Pad. In addition to mastery of the specific Geometry content, I have expert knowledge of the vertical alignment structure of secondary mathematics. I know exactly where the content learned in Geometry becomes important in later subjects such as Calculus and Precalculus.

My 18 year old is very bright but has always struggled with math and it has lead her to even have anxiety attacks. She had her first session with Mr. Rob and it was like a light switch was turned on. Her exact words were "I wish I had teachers like him in every subject then high school and upcoming college would be so less scary and challenging. She made her next tutoring session on her own and
