About TED

I am a certified teacher and a successful tutor. I was the FIRST person to graduate from The University of Louisville with a BS in Chemistry and a Minor in Management.

My son had ADHD and I taught Chemistry to ADHD/ADD students at Trinity High School. Trinity also sent me to ADD/ADHD Conferences to expand my experience with ADD/ADHD. This was fortunate because I attended not only as an educator but also as a parent.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have passed the WyzAnt tests in the following areas: Elementary Math, Elementary Science, Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary.

In addition, I have tutored a young lady for a one hour session, twice a week beginning December 2013 while she was a 6th grader. We met over the summer and continue to meet twice a week during her 7th Grade year.

I am also tutoring a 5th grader at a local school. I have been tutoring him one hour per week since this past August.

I volunteer at Fern Creek Elementary for the BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK PROGRAM. I have done that since January 2014 on every Wednesday. Because of my work there, the Principal has asked me to work with reading groups, 2 to 3 students at a time.

Organic Chemistry

I developed and taught an Organic Chemistry Course at Trinity High School for Juniors and Seniors. The class covered Nomenclature that is taught in ORGANIC CHEMISTRY 1 in colleges.

I wrote a grant to Louisville Chamber of Commerce and received enough money to buy 30 ball and stick model kits for the students to learn by building models of the molecules in class.

I use those model kits when I tutor Organic.

Study Skills

In my five years of teaching at Oldham County High School, and my 15 years of teaching at Trinity High School, I taught study skills.

I suggested to students AND parents that they buy a folder and a spiral notebook for each class. As an example, the folder and spiral notebook for Math should be blue. The folder and spiral notebook for English should be yellow. The folder is for papers the teacher passes out in class like homework, and other papers that need to be returned, like permission slips signed by parents for field trips. Having a different color for each class helps to keep science papers IN the Science folder.

I also apply this to the students that I tutor.

I also teach the student I tutor to break down BIG assignments and complete those assignments step by step.

To the students I tutor in Chemistry, I pass out a list of the 50 Ions they need to know. This is a BIG assignment, so I break it down for them in groups of 10, all with the same charge in a group.

I suggest they take about 5 minutes to merely write down the Ion names in group 1 on Monday when they get home. Next to fill in the symbols and charges, check it, and put it away. On Tuesday, they do group 2, and so on through the week. This continues each week until the student has learned these. Reinforcement happens in class as the teacher teaches about Chemistry and mentions them.

I tell them that to read over the notes they took that day for every class is a form of studying and will help them with their homework.

If they do not take notes, I suggest they start taking notes in class and that I want to see their notes the next time we meet for tutoring.

I break down the Multiplication Table, Addition Facts, Subtraction Facts and Division facts using the same method for those I tutor.

Parents are surprised at seeing tasks they struggled with in school are broken down into manageable learning bites.

Whenever I meet with students, I ask for their class notes. We go over them and I explain the importance of going over your notes each day.

Some students come with all of their work jumbled up in one folder and their notes for all classes in one notebook. That is the opening for me to suggest to the parent I tutor AND the parent about different colored folders and spiral notebooks for each class.
