About Brian

My name is Brian. I am an eager, fun, effective tutor with nearly 30 years' experience working with students from Head Start to senior citizens. I have taught and tutored every grade and most subjects in settings including inner city and suburban public schools, a hospital, a private school, and in homes and home hospitalizations.

My degrees and certification are in Elementary Education; Special Education with emphasis in Learning and Behavioral Disabilities; and Moderate to Severe Disabilities. I have taught, tutored, and mentored students who are cognitively and artistically gifted, typically-developing, have mild-to-severe retardation from myriad syndromes and injuries, have mild-to-severe ADD and ADHD, are orthopedically or otherwise physically challenged, and with autism of varying degrees and manifestations.

I have no one-size-fits-all tutoring methods or strategies. Knowing each student's interests, learning styles, and strengths is critical before addressing her/his needs. Academic and social instruction may be laid back, rote-and-drill, or in collaboration with your child's teachers.

In addition to improving their grasp and use of their academic content, my students and tutees have learned English as a new language, coping with Asperger's syndrome, developing cognitive and artistic gifts, prepared for standardized tests. My experience and enthusiasm for ALL students makes me an excellent choice for you. Let's talk...

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. I have extensive experience with students of all ages with mild to severe ADD and ADHD. Extensive tutoring of students w/ADD/ADHD.

From my first day teaching I have worked closely with students of all ages from all backgrounds with mild to severe ADD/ADHD. My students and tutees with ADD/ADHD begin with a thorough, honest self-inventory of strengths and areas of growth, continue with an organizational 'boot camp', and learn self-monitoring through means from self-talk to checklists.

These strategies have been very useful in public and private tutoring sessions, an invitation-only ADD/ADHD after school weekly session for middle schoolers, and working closely with counselors, social workers, guardians, and physicians.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. I have extensive experience with students of all ages with autism spectrum disorders.

I have worked closely with students from 3 - 22 with varied degrees and manifestations of autism. My students and tutees have had IQs from 50 to 150, have been non-verbal to hyper-verbal, have come from every race, socioeconomic status, and support system.

My current job allows me to work very closely with guardians, physicians, counselors, therapists, and social workers to plan treatment, IEPs, educational adaptations, and report behavioral and academic observations.

Dyslexia

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. I have extensive experience with students of all ages with dyslexia and other cognitive and visual issues.

I have worked with students with dyslexia and related issues from age 3 to 90. DIAGNOSING can be easy and TREATMENT difficult, or vice versa. Patience is my strength in this domain, along with a willingness to consult with colleagues at the collegiate level whenever necessary.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. Have taught every grade in urban, suburban, private parochial, and hospital schools.

Though my first undergraduate degree and earliest teaching and tutoring experiences were years ago in intermediate elementary, my current position in a hospital school requires me to teach students in all grades; consequently, I am apprised of and practice best practices in K-6 curriculum, lesson planning, educational delivery and assessment, and data analysis each school day.

Elementary Math

I am rated Highly Qualified to teach Elementary Math by the Kentucky Department of Education. I have worked with preK to high school seniors. Most of my experience is in special education classrooms and situations; methods used there, though, are extremely useful to even the most gifted student.

English

I am ranked 'Highly Qualified' to teach Reading, Writing, and English Language Arts by the Kentucky Department of Education. I have taught reading and language arts in EVERY grade in situations from self-contained special needs classes to classes for the gifted.

Before teaching, I worked for several years in the publishing industry, editing and proofreading work for publication.

Phonics

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring students of all ages phonemics, phonics, and higher reading skills.

Praxis

I have taken multiple versions over time and have nine years' teaching experience. I also have extensive study of test construction and work closely with a professor who wrote several versions.

Public Speaking

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. I am a current doctoral student performing regular speaking functions.

Reading

I have taught reading in all grades and all levels of ability. I am rated Highly Qualified in Teaching Elementary Reading, Teaching Middle School Reading, and Teaching Special Education Reading.

My students and tutees begin with assessment of their strengths and areas of need. Phonics, whole word/sight word, decoding, fluency, and comprehension - whatever the struggle, we will work together to plan the best course of action.

Social Studies

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities and extensive experience teaching and tutoring all ages in social studies K-12.

Sociology

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. I also have extensive experience teaching sociology at middle and high school level. I am a current doctoral student focusing on educational sociology.

Special Needs

I have degrees in Elementary Education, Learning and Behavior Disabilities K-12, and Moderate-to-Severe Disabilities. I also have extensive experience with students of all ages with autism spectrum disorders, myriad developmental and cognitive disorders, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic impairments, and visual disabilities.

Study Skills

I have worked for over 15 years in settings from an inner city Head Start program, to a suburban middle school with more than 90% students receiving free/reduced lunch, to an all-female parochial high school. Each had problems unique to their populations, to be sure, but each had students in each grade, from every imaginable background needing help with study skills.

My experience and credentials working with special needs populations, especially learning disabilities, makes me an ideal choice to help organize, study, review, and set sights on the next steps.

Writing

In addition to teaching reading and language arts in PK -- high school, I have also worked as a copy editor for Rizzoli/Universe, and AIA publications. I am currently working towards a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, which I hope will help me not just to TEACH writing better, but SELL some, too. We shall see. :)

Great understanding, attitude and patience

Brian is a truly amazing teacher. He approaches his students with understanding, patience and willingness to adjust to individual needs and preferences. He started with evaluating our son's needs and prepared an individual plan of addressing them. He is also very kind and brings calmness to the learning process. Thank you, Brian!
