About Hiromi

I am currently a student at Ball State University, pursuing a Doctor of Arts degree in piano performance. My secondary emphasis is music theory. As a teaching assistant throughout my graduate studies, I have worked as an accompanist and taught ear training, group piano, and private piano lessons. I can assist you with music theory (written theory, ear training & sight-singing), music history, and piano playing.

As a native speaker in Japanese, I can also be your conversation partner and assist you with proof-reading your essay and reading in Japanese. I am an instructor at Greater Louisville Regional Japanese School, which offers Japanese, math, social studies in Japanese.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

(My favorite composers are J. S. Bach and Chopin!)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

As a graduate teaching assistant at Ball State University, I have three years of experience teaching sight singing and ear training courses. In the two year sight/ear program, I was assigned to teach both first and second year courses. I am aware of different systems of sight singing melodies (e.g. movable do, fixed do, and numbers) and teaching strategies. Recently, I was nominated for a university-wide excellence in teaching award where only one teaching assistant is nominated from a department each year.

Japanese

I am a native Japanese speaker from Tokyo. Currently, I am an instructor at a Regional Japanese Saturday School, which provides courses entirely in Japanese. The courses include Japanese, social studies, and math. I also have experience assisting Japanese learners.

Music Theory

I have studied music theory extensively at University of Kentucky, and as my secondary emphasis of doctoral studies at Ball State University. I was awarded a teaching assistantship in music theory at Ball State University where I taught all levels of ear training courses and tutored music theory. My coursework includes music theory pedagogy and special topics such as Schenkerian analysis and French music.

Piano

I am currently a student at Ball State University, pursuing a Doctor of Arts degree in piano performance under the guidance of Dr. Robert Palmer. As a graduate assistant throughout my graduate studies, I have worked as an accompanist and taught ear training, group piano, and private piano lessons. Prior to Ball State University, I studied at the University of Kentucky and Ohio State University where I earned Master of Music and Bachelor of Music degrees in piano performance, respectively. To expand my expertise in music, I have attended summer camps and conferences including Adamant Music School and “Musical Summer at the Mill” International Masterclasses & Festival in Moulin d’Andé, France. In 2010, I was invited as a guest performer/lecturer at Pianofest, a summer camp for pre-college students at the University of Kentucky.

Kind and knowledgeable

I like how Hiromi explained things clearly and easy to follow along. Hiromi helped me with some parts of Japanese that I was stuck on.
