About Emily

Hello!

My name is Emily and I offer a variety of tutoring services, including Spanish, general education elementary, piano, and flute.

My experience and knowledge of Spanish has prepared me to be an excellent Spanish tutor. I took five years of Spanish classes where I acquired skills in grammar, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension. I also spent six months in Spain living with a Spanish host family, which improved my Spanish immensely. I am a well-rounded Spanish speaker because I have knowledge from a classroom, where I learned the technicalities of the language, but also was immersed in Spanish-speaking country, which helped me to improve conversational skills.

Also, I have a great deal of experience with children, and much of it involves teaching. These experiences allow me to be a tutor in almost any elementary school subject. I was a religious school teaching assistant for first and second graders for four years and an English teaching assistant at an international school in Shanghai, China for a summer. I also have volunteered as a tutor in kindergarten English and third grade math. During my six months in Spain, I was an au pair where my primary duty was to teach English to the children, ages six and three. Both children improved their English immensely. I also was a camp counselor for two summers and have been babysitting since I was twelve years old, which helped me further develop my skills in working with children. I am now a family therapist where I work with abused children, teaching them coping skills, emotion regulation, and how to process trauma.

I also have a great deal of musical experience, which helps me to be an excellent piano and flute instructor. I took weekly piano lessons from 1997 to 2008, and have continued to play on my own since then. I have performed in about 30 recitals, and have performed for judges on multiple occasions where I received ratings. I received the highest rating every time, except for once, when I received the second highest rating. I started playing the flute in sixth grade band, and continued through senior year of high school. I was in the front row in the top band of my high school, Lakota East. Lakota East's music program is very well-established and is known for being the best of the best among high school bands. These experiences not only taught me how to play these instruments, but about interpretation, expression, and fundamentals of music in general. I would love the opportunity to pass on this knowledge!

Please let me know if you are interested in speaking with me! Thank you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a lot of experience working with kids in general, but specifically with tutoring. I was a camp counselor for two summers and have been babysitting for twelve years. I was also a teaching assistant for religious school for four years, an English teaching assistant in China for a summer, and an au pair for a Spanish family for six months where I taught English to the children. These experiences taught me how to work with children and the best approaches for making them understand concepts. I also have tutored kindergarteners in English and third graders in math. Therefore, I have experience not only working with kids in general, but working with elementary school subjects also.

Flute

I started playing the flute in sixth grade band, and continued through senior year of high school. I was in the front row in the top band of my high school, Lakota East. Lakota East's music program is very well-established and is known for being the best of the best among high school bands. I also have performed in front of a judge on numerous occasions and have always received very high ratings. These experiences not only taught me how to play these instruments, but about interpretation, expression, and fundamentals of music in general. I would love the opportunity to pass on this knowledge!

Piano

I took weekly piano lessons from 1997 to 2008, and have continued to play on my own since then. I have performed in about 30 recitals, and have performed for judges on multiple occasions where I received ratings. I received the highest rating every time, except for once, when I received the second highest rating. These experiences not only taught me how to play these instruments, but about interpretation, expression, and fundamentals of music in general. Spanish

I have four years of high school Spanish (including AP Spanish, two classes in college, lived in Spain for six months, tutored beginner Spanish grammar before.

Speech

I would like to submit qualification because I want to apply to the job that someone posted about wanting to improve the accent because he/she is not a native English speaker. I speak English very well and have never needed any help with my speech. I also spent six months in Spain where I was often misunderstood while speaking Spanish because my American accent was so strong! Being immersed in a different accent made me realize the way we, as English speakers, speak. I understand the different sounds and positions of the mouth in order to say the words properly. I also have helped many Spanish people to speak with the proper accent.
