About David

I am a teacher in the Jefferson County Public School System. I am certified to teach Science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science), and Social Studies (Civics, American and World History). I have taught all of these subjects in the last three years. I have a valid Teaching Certificate on file with the Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board.

I am also a Proctor for ACT, I am familiar with all of the latest wrinkles in the ever changing test. I am ready to help you prepare to make your first attempt at the test a home run, or to help you squeeze that extra 5-10 points if you are re-taking the test.

I have experience working with students who need a little extra attention to achieve a positive learning outcome. I work regularly with students that have ADD/ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and English Language Learners. I have worked successfully with students ranging from 6th grade to 12th, and my current teaching position is with Freshmen, and Juniors in High School.

I have a varied background of practical working experience in Science before teaching from radio wave propagation in the U.S. Army (4 years), to Chemist for a distillery in Frankfort (10 years).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

As part of my masters in Education, I took two Graduate level courses; "Parallel Cultures" (EDUC 547), and "Parents, School, Community" (EDUC 610). These courses dealt with the special needs of and teaching techniques used with learners that have special needs (i.e. ADD/ADHD, Aspergers, and Autism). In addition, I have 4 years practical experience in a classroom environment with students that have diverse learning needs.

Praxis

I have passed the praxis with almost a perfect score and am a Master Teacher in my district. I am a teacher trainer for new teachers in my district.

Public Speaking

I took public speaking courses in college. In addition, while in High School, I won the Kentucky State Championship in Speech and Debate. Additionally, I am currently the Speech and Debate coach at the High School in which I currently teach.

Social Studies

I have a B.A. In Political Science from the University of Kentucky, and am certified to teach Social Studies in Kentucky.

Study Skills

I am a certified, licensed teacher in the state of Kentucky and teach in a Freshman Academy. A large part of our curriculum is giving the students the fundamental study and "school" skills for them to succeed in High School. Additionally, I am involved as an instructor in a local program sponsored by the University of Louisville (called the "Go College!" program). This program takes at-risk student populations and works on study skills and critical skill development.

Tremendous amount of information in a short amount of time

Every time I work with David, I feel that I take away at least three months of condensed information I would have learned in a regular classroom environment. He is very patient and understands how to work with my personality and learning style. I enjoy working with David very much!
