About Shannon

I am a mature educated and experienced instructor with a background as a scientist and a published author. I have the ability to adapt my interaction, instruction, and teaching methodologies and strategies to fit the individual needs of students. My teaching skills have been honed by working with the differing intellectual and behavioral learning needs of individual students in order to provide the most effective tutoring services.

My style of tutoring students is predicated on improving student success in school or in the workplace through instruction in a variety of core subjects, including: basic and advanced sciences, chemistry, mathematics, history, literature, humanities, and social studies while concentrating on improving basic reading, writing, vocabulary, math, and study skills.

My educational skills include: a Bachelor’s degree in biology (with a minor in European history); 20 hours of course work and student teaching toward the pursuit of an MEd; and a Juris Doctorate. My Master's work in education included an emphasis on teaching exceptional children (including gifted, attention deficit, dyslexic, and students with emotional and behavioral disorders).

I have many years of professional experience as a scientist, writer, and trainer in the private sector and as a federal employee. I have many years of experience providing employer training to employees at all levels, from professionals with degrees to unskilled laborers, including illiterate and/or learning disabled workers. I am a published author of a variety of technical and legal articles.

As a result of both my educational and professional experience, I have particular expertise in science related subjects, including chemistry and biology. In addition, I have particular expertise in LSAT preparation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with many students with ADHD (including my own son) and have been able to keep their attention and get them to learn by tailoring my teaching skills to the student's individual learning ability. I found that the first step to be taken is to make sure daily planners are used DAILY; sometimes checklists are necessary; what is most important is to make sure the student is well organized which will naturally lead into the student also being prepared. For certain subjects, such as science and math, I have found that many students are better able to focus when props or aids are used in conjunction with instruction and 2-way dialogues between the teacher and the student.

Botany

I earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Louisville in 1986. My honors research and senior thesis work was in the field of botany. I worked directly with Dr. Davis at the University in the area of biodenitrification in sanitary sewage treatment. I also assisted Dr. Davis in the field necessary to develop a new species of evening primrose.

Criminal Justice

I have a Juris Doctorate from the Chase School of Law. As part of my course work there, I studied criminal law and criminal procedure. I also took several courses in my undergraduate work at the University of Louisville in criminal justice. At one point, I was in the process of joining the FBI (but an unexpected pregnancy changed my plans). I have tutored other students taking Criminal Justice in college (for both juvenile and adult courts of law).

Dyslexia

I received my teaching exceptional children education from Xavier University I have experience working with students with a variety of learning disabilities as well as with gifted children. When working with children or adults with dyslexia, I use an innovative approach to developmental learning that takes into consideration visual and auditory learning strengths in order to allowing students to better integrate sensory messages

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience teaching and working with children in grades K-6th. As a professional scientist, I have visited grade schools and taught the students in various areas of study such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, ecology, science, social studies, native American studies, chemistry, etc. I have hands-on experience teaching children through scientific experiments and have been a judge many times at various science fairs.

English

I am a published author in various technical, trade, and legal journals and magazines. I enjoy writing and helping young authors learn who to write effectively.

Social Studies

I have taken various courses in social studies during my undergraduate and master's programs. I have experience in providing individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds. I have experience providing instructions to others in a social studies program involving factual background material and current events, using discussion groups, and other activities to encourage pupils to develop skills and draw conclusions, improve interpersonal relationships, and make value judgments based on accurate methods of inquiry.

Sociology

I have taken various sociology classes and written several papers addressing issues involved with the study of social behavior and human society. I have also taught social and cultural concepts to students. In addition, I have provided instruction in regard to social structures, social systems and social interactions.

Study Skills

I have several years of educational as work experience helping students develop and improve study skills tailored to meet each student's needs. I like to use daily planners, checklists, and outlines. I encourage students to try various methods of study skills in order to take advantage of each student's own particular skill.

Tax Preparation

I have over ten years of experience preparing tax returns. I am competent to prepare personal, various types of returns for different types of business organizations. I have a juris doctorate from Chase School of Law, and took several advanced tax writing courses there. I also have been a volunteer tax return preparer under the VITA program.
