About Annice

Annice has been a reading tutor since 2008. She has taught students in three different school districts: Jefferson County Public Schools, Los Angeles United School District, and Washington, D.C. Annice has worked with many students with a broad range of needs and abilities, ranging from mainstream students to those with special needs (ADHD and Autism) and ESL. Her specialties include teaching all aspects of English to children and adults (phonics, reading comprehension, writing composition, musical grammar lessons, GED prep, and standardized test-taking strategies). Annice also has taught Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and builds computers as a hobby.

Annice is a graduate of Morehead State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Radio-Television Broadcasting. She also completed Master's courses in Secondary Education at the University of Phoenix campus (Woodland Hills, CA). Her concentration was in English. Annice maintained a 3.94 grade point average while attending school part-time and working 40 or more hours a week. While attending graduate school in California, Annice also sang professionally, and decided to combine her love of music and English, developing a unique multimedia program. This program uses illustrations, songs, videos and software to teach English grammar. Annice says, “I really love imparting knowledge in an engaging manner, which makes learning fun!”

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Desktop Publishing

I have been creating desktop publishing presentations since 1993, resulting in forming my first business. Consequently, I began teaching desktop publishing skills to students in 1997, which I still do today, using PowerPoint and Publisher.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have completed courses for my Master's degree, and I have taught levels K thru 12th grade as a private tutor. Also, I have worked in three different school districts, teaching English to students for levels K thru 12. Presently, I am teaching students at the elementary level (Kindergarten, 1st grade and 4th grade).

Grammar

I hold a BA in English and Radio-Television Broadcasting from Morehead State University. I have completed courses at the Master's level in Secondary Education (English). In addition, I have published a multimedia grammar program, which uses songs and videos. My teaching experience spans over 25 years.

Microsoft Outlook

I use MS Outlook daily all throughout the day. But, most importantly, I have completed training from the beginning level up to the advanced level in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access and Windows.

Phonics

I completed a Double Major in English and Radio-Television Broadcasting to earn my Undergraduate degree. My transcript will show the phonics course I took (e.g. Business and Professional Speech and Voice and Articulation). In addition, I completed ten consecutive years of voice training, and I am a professional singer. Lastly, I have been teaching phonics to children and adults for over 20 years.

Public Speaking

My experience as a public speaker is rather extensive. I have been paid to conduct seminars, and I was honored at Morehead State University as a "Scholar in Resident." Writing and delivering a speech has become like "second nature" to me. And, I can teach other people how to speak effectively before a crowd of people.

Study Skills

While I was earning my Undergraduate degree, I worked at the Morehead State University library for two years. We had to take Library Science during the entire duration of our employment. Consequently, I had to take a Study Skills course, which enhanced my study skills greatly. We learned how to use the SQR3 technique, which I have incorporated into the classes I teach.

Writing

I have been trained, and paid, to write technical and creative manuscripts. My Undergraduate degree is in English and Radio-Television Broadcasting. Consequently, I began working as a Copywriter for a Gannett newspaper affiliate, and later wrote for news broadcasts (radio and TV), which led me to the Los Angeles area. While living there, I attended graduate school, and wrote many term papers, using APA style. Also, I am well versed in using AP Style, MLA and Chicago Style formats.
