About Peter

I have been blessed with a broad, rich mix of professional opportunities and challenges through my career in education and believe I have grown and learned from each. I have always enjoyed a reputation as a student advocate, a supporter of young people and a person upon whom students can depend. I am a very good listener and invest personally in each and every young person with whom I work. I have tutored many of my students as well as my own children and have a variety of ways of presenting concepts and teaching problem solving.

Along with teaching high school math in Maine, Connecticut and Kentucky, I have supervised and evaluated the high school math teachers in Caracas, Venezuela, where I served as Assistant High school Principal. As Dean of Academics at a school in London, I was responsible for reviewing and updating the math curriculum as well as directing the school's re-accreditation every 10 years. Last but not least, I worked as Associate Director of Admission and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Ivy League universities.

I am a life-long learner and love a challenge. I have a well-balanced sense of self, a commitment to working hard and attending to important details. I am patient and understanding, and believe everyone can learn – yes! even math.

I look forward to working with you and know that when we put your effort together with my skills, we'll form a winning team.

Best wishes,
Peter S.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I worked as Associate Director of Admission at Yale from 1966 to 1971, and then as Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at the University of Pennsylvania from 1971 to 1975.
Transferring to the other side of the desk, I was employed as: College Counselor at Northfield Mt. Hermon School from 1984-1987; Head of College Counseling at Escuela Campo Alegre,Caracas, Venezuela from 1992 - 1994; College counselor from 1994 to 1996 while serving as Dean of Academics at the American School in London; and trained a brand new college counselor at Collegiate School, Louisville, KY while working as Director of Development. Most recently, I was the head of counseling/ college counselor at he Pan American School of Porto Alegre, Porto Alegre, Brasil. I bring extensive knowledge and experience gained from many years of working both sides of the admission/counseling desk.
