About Paul

I am a 2012 graduate of Spalding University with a Masters in Teaching (Middle and High School Language Arts). In 2007 I traveled to Indonesia and taught English at a private school in Jakarta for one year. The following year I taught at a Language Institute in Bangkok, Thailand where I frequently taught one on one with my students. After returning to the United States I began my studies for my Master’s Degree and taught English as a Second Language for adults for Jefferson County Public Schools. I was a teacher’s aide for exceptional children for JCPS from 2012 to 2013 until I began working as a GED instructor for the Kentucky Department of Corrections.

During all this time I have tutored English, Language Arts and English as a Second Language for a number of students in the Louisville area.

I have a great love of writing and have two published books of poetry to my name. Including poetry, I love writing essays. At one time I wrote and broadcast personal essays for a local National Public Radio Station. I really enjoy teaching writing and editing. It's a real passion for me.

I teach through encouragement and positive reinforcement. I also like to make the learning experience for the teacher and student a lot of fun.

I am ready, willing and able to be your tutor!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

American History is a personal favorite of mine. I love reading it and I try to weave it into my ESL lessons as well as any Literature or Language Arts I teach. I have taught "The Declaration of Independence," "The Gettysburg Address," and Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" Speech as a direct line in the progress of American Democracy.

English

My Masters includes concentrations in Middle and High School Language Arts. I'm currently teaching English in Adult Education at a correctional institute.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL in Jakarta, Indonesia and Bangkok, Thailand. In Jakarta I worked for a private school called English First Menteng and my contract was for one year. In Bangkok I worked for eight months for a language institute called the Wall Street Language Institute. I am currently teaching ESL for Jefferson County Public Schools Adult Education where I teach English to the Immigrant/Refugee Community. I'm also currently getting my Masters Degree in Teaching which will give me an ESL endorsement to teach in the public schools.

European History

The history of Europe is one that fascinates me, especially that of the 19th and 20th century. I love how European thought developed from Greece and Rome, as well as the Renaissance. The history and literature of Europe has had a profound effect on American History and I will provide the connections to our culture.

General Computer

I have taught beginning and intermediate computer skills for using the internet, internet searching skills and Microsoft Word when I was a library assistant for the Louisville Free Public Library. I usually taught for adults who wanted to learn the technology or for those who had not been able to have access to a computer. I always enjoyed this and consistently received good evaluations from my students.

Grammar

I am currently involved in teaching grammar to adult students.

Literature

My Masters includes concentrations in Middle and High School Literature. I have been tutoring in literature.
