I graduated from Buffalo State College with a degree in Elementary Education (grades 1-6). When I was young I struggled with math so much I would get frustrated and want to give up. Once sixth grade rolled around I got a new teacher, we called Mr. I, that helped build my confidence and helped me learn at my own pace. He encouraged me, and made me realize that I could accomplish anything with hard work, and determination. Today, math is my favorite subject to teach, because I get to give back and help others understand in their own way, and at their own pace. My most recent placement was in Buffalo, NY teaching a fifth grade class (as seen in my picture). I took the time to get to know each and every student for who they really were as people and as learners, which helped build mutual respect in the classroom. I love to teach because I enjoy helping children be successful, and confident.
I understand that math can be incredibly difficult to comprehend. I also understand that math can be taught in a myriad of ways. Everyone learns differently, and I am experienced in finding different ways of teaching how to solve problems. During my time in student teaching, I was responsible for presenting all math lessons. After, the classroom would break into small groups to practice the lesson objective. I took over the small group of students that were not meeting the objectives. My goals were to give each student the attention they needed and the materials they needed to be successful. Some students just need to break the math problems down and talk through the process, others need to use visual aids, such as base ten blocks. No matter what the situation, I always found a way to help my students understand, but recognizing the issue, finding the method most appropriate and presenting it in a way that peeks their interests.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
