Hi! My name is Laura and I have been a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing for Fayette County Schools for the past 9 years, and I absolutely love it! I received my Bachelors degree in Deaf Education at Eastern Kentucky University and received my Masters degree in the same field from there as well. I am certified in teaching students in the general education setting from Preschool through 5th grade as well as students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing from Preschool through 12th grade.
The subjects I am interested in teaching are Reading, Grammar, Phonics, Writing (across all grade levels), as well as Math, Science, and Social Studies (Elementary and Middle school level). I also have experience in teaching Anerican Sign Language as well.
I have taught Reading, Phonics, and Grammar to Preschool through 8th grade students for 9 years.
I am certified in teaching elementary students with and without a hearing loss, Preschool through 5th grade. I have taught elementary students 6 out of the 9 years that I have been teaching (I am currently teaching middle schoolers, 6th-8th grade).
I am certified in Deaf Education and have taught students with hearing losses for 9 years. Teaching phonics is a large part of the specialized field that I am in.
I understand that there are some things in life that do not come as easily to us as we would like, and more often than not, academics tends to be one of them. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified, through Eastern Kentucky University, in elementary education, which means I am licensed to teach Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Out of the nine years I have been a teacher, I have taught elementary school (all subjects) for six of those years.
I hold a Masters degree in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education from Eastern Kentucky University. I have been a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for the past 9 years for Fayette County schools in Lexington, KY.
I have taught phonics to elementary students for 6 out of the 9 years I have been teaching. I am trained in Visual Phonics and the Orton-Gillingham (Phonics/Reading) Program.
I have taught elementary students for 6 years in all subjects and am currently a middle school teacher who teaches Language Arts to students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Therefore, my method of reading instruction is very broken down and easy for all students to understand.
At Eastern Kentucky University, I completed four American Sign Language courses as well as an English Sign Language course. I have also taught ASL community classes (provided by the Fayette County School district) for four years.
