About Tony

I completed my undergraduate work in Secondary Education (Michigan Provisional Certificate) with a double-major in English and Mathematics and did my student teaching in Michigan in both subjects. I returned to school to complete a Masters of Fine Arts in English: Creative Writing (Poetry) from The University of Alabama where I taught full-time for several years and received multiple department and university commendations for my teaching.

In 2004, I received the Maureen Egan Writer's Exchange Award from Poets & Writers Magazine as the poet from Kentucky, and I have received an Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship for Poetry from the Kentucky Arts Council.

For the past several years, I have served as the President of the Central Kentucky Audubon Society, promoting the enjoyment, understanding, importance, and preservation of birds and their habitats. Until recently, I worked as an Automotive Sales Representative at local dealerships, so can also speak to the practical "business" side of writing and math.

Most people are either "scientific" or "creative" -- left or right brained. I'm both. This gives me a unique ability to creatively present abstract mathematical concepts or to logically analyze literature and writing. I can make either math, or literature, grammar, and writing clear to you! In college, I was the guy that my English and Theater major friends asked for help with their Mathematics courses; I was also the guy who my Mathematics major friends asked for help with their writing assignments. I've been tutoring for a long time and enjoy helping people "get it."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I hold a Bachelors in Secondary Education with double-majors in Mathematics and English.

English

I hold a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education: English and Mathematics majors, an (expired) Michigan Provisional Certificate, and a Masters of Fine Arts in English: Creative Writing.

GRE

Though my Masters was in English, my strongest GRE areas were the Quantitative and Analytic sections, where I got a 800 out of 800 and a 710 out of 800 respectively under the old scoring system. I have tutored several people to improved scores in both of these areas.

Literature

Bachelor of Secondary Education with major in English, Master of Fine Arts in English/Creative Writing, taught American and British Literature survey courses at the University of Alabama.

Logic

I received a Secondary Education degree with majors in both Mathematics and English. Both subjects require strong logic abilities. I have years of experience teaching logical argument and persuasion in college English writing classes and I also have experience tutoring students in "symbolic logic shortcuts" to help improve scores for the GRE Analytic section.
