About Karen

I come from a long line of teachers. My father was a teacher; his sister is a teacher; my uncle is a teacher ... and I have always felt teaching is in my blood. Like my father, I have a natural gift for teaching - for taking the "impossible" and making it possible. I believe this is because: 1. I care about my student's understanding and 2. I know how to communicate in a way that facilitates understanding. Additionally, I love to watch students learn. It is a great gift to see a student's progress and know that I helped make it happen.

As far as my qualifications: I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a minor in Spanish from the University of California. I also have a Juris Doctorate and am a licensed attorney. I have worked as a private tutor for Elementary, Middle and High School Students in a wide variety of subjects, including, math, English and Spanish. I have also worked as a student and substitute teacher at all school levels, up to and including law school. I have passed many AP examinations and the Bar examination in three different states and I know how to break down material and how to study for and pass examinations. I have learned that successful learning, like successful teaching, is, in large part, about the approach - and my approach has been very successful.

Most people either love math or hate it. Well, my father was a math teacher, so I kind of had to love it - or at least master it. Fortunately, he was a great teacher, and he taught me. And, when you have a great teacher, then you really learn and master a subject. I learned my math fundamentals and I never forgot them. Unfortunately, many of my friends were not so lucky, and have forgotten their math. I know this because I have helped many of their children, tutoring them and getting them through everything from fractions to geometry. I have a gift for explaining concepts and making things click and stick. I can take the confusion out of math and make it approach something that is fun (or at least understandable)!

I studied Spanish from elementary school through College. I passed the AP Spanish Examination in High School and was a Spanish language minor in College. I was a foreign exchange student to Uruguay in high school and while there, I attended all my school courses in Spanish. I read, write and speak Spanish. Most importantly, I not only speak, read, write Spanish, I understand how to teach an explain it so that it makes sense, even to those who think they aren't good at foreign languages. I have tutored several people of all ages in Spanish, all with excellent results!

I graduated from the University of California with a Bachelor's Degree in English. I have tutored students at all levels and worked both as a student teacher and substitute teacher. I also have a Juris Doctorate degree and am licensed to practice law in Kentucky, California and Oregon. As a lawyer, I have a lot of practice with reading, writing and understanding the complexities of understanding and breaking down language. For many people, writing is a very difficult chore and grammar gives them a headache. Well, not me! I love to write. I have an excellent understanding of language, writing, and more importantly of how to teach it to others - which is not an easy task. I am also fantastic at explaining and teaching the fundamentals of grammar.

I would love to help you learn and I am confident that I can!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I am admitted to practice law in three states: Kentucky, California and Oregon. All three bar admissions were by examination. I successfully took the bar exam in each of the three jurisdictions and passed all three on the first time. Additionally, I have tutored students studying for the California bar exam.
