About Abigail

I began my first teaching job at fourteen years old, and ever since I have taught or tutored a variety of subjects. Some highlights in my teaching career include designing and teaching my own College Composition courses for the University of Maine, Orono; designing and teaching College Composition and Introduction to Research courses at Howard University; working as a Teaching Assistant for African American Poetry at Howard University; and several years of experience as a writing tutor at Dickinson College, the University of Maine, and Howard University.

While a great deal of my teaching and tutoring experience has been in higher education, I have taught students ages 4 years through adult. I also spent several summers working for the Center for Talented Youth of Johns Hopkins University, which primarily serves children ages 12-17.

As my experiences indicate, I have had a lifelong passion for learning, which I love sharing with my students. I am a compassionate and enthusiastic teacher/tutor, pushing my students to strive for progress not perfection. Because I have both classroom and private tutoring experience, I am well practiced in adjusting my teaching techniques to individual needs while maintaining efficiency.

Although I have a 12 hour cancellation policy, I am flexible with scheduling, location, and making up any sessions a student may need to cancel. I look forward to hearing from anyone seeking help with their studies!

Note: I also have experience with tutoring some professional writing such as writing resumes and writing personal statements/statements of purpose that may be required for school or job applications.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I have studied classical ballet for over twenty years, including two years at the pre-professional program at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities. There, I studied with world-renowned ballet dancers Stanislav Issaev, Irina Ushakova, and Robert Barnett. I have also taught ballet classes sporadically.

English

I have a B.A. in English from Dickinson College and graduated magna cum laude, an M.A. in English with an emphasis in gender in literature from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. in English from Howard University where I specialized in 20th Century Black Women's Literature.

ESL/ESOL

As a writing tutor in college, I worked with a wide variety of students, including ESL students. Part of my training in graduate school for teaching writing included studying teaching methods to meet the needs of ESL students. While teaching writing at both the University of Maine and Howard University, several ESL students flowed through my classes and successfully improved their English speaking and writing skills under my tutelage.

Grammar

I have multiple degrees in English, which requires a great deal of writing and speaking with grammatical accuracy. I have also tutored undergraduate and graduate students in writing, taught writing composition, worked in several writing centers, presented at several academic conferences, and published peer-reviewed scholarly articles. All of these experiences require not simply general knowledge of grammar but finesse.

Handwriting

While homeschooling, my mother drilled me in handwriting in both print and cursive. Throughout high school and college, I often received complements from teachers and professors on not only the beauty of my script but also the consistency, writing several pages in script that looked identical from start to finish.

Literature

I have a B.A. in English from Dickinson College where I graduated Magna cum laude, an M.A. in English with an emphasis in gender in literature from the University of Maine, and I have a Ph.D. in English from Howard University where I specialized in Black Women's Literature. While I specialized in certain areas, each of my degrees has equipped me with a strong general knowledge of English literature, including various traditions (e.g. American Literature, British Literature, Caribbean Literature, etc.), as well as literary theories and methodologies.

Piano

I took private piano lessons for many years. For the last five years of my piano study, I competed annually in the National Piano Guild Auditions at the national and international levels, consistently receiving very high marks. At the age of 14, my piano teacher hired me to work as one of her cadet teachers, meaning I had my own group of private piano students who I both scheduled and taught for two years. Their ages ranged from 4 years through adult.

Proofreading

I hold multiple degrees in English, which requires extensive writing and therefore proofreading. I have tutored undergraduate and graduate students in writing, taught writing composition, and worked in several writing centers. I also have free-lance experience with copy and line editing.

Study Skills

Having over a decade of higher education, I have an enormous amount of personal experience studying under intense pressure to perform a variety of scholarly tasks. Beginning in high school, my teachers used me a resource for my peers to turn to when they needed help studying outside of the classroom. Ever since then, I have incorporated a number of study strategies into my tutoring and teaching as a way to help students become increasingly independent. I encourage students to experiment and find the study skills/strategies that work best for their individual learning styles and needs.

Vocabulary

While I could list a number of reasons why I am qualified to tutor students on vocabulary, the most convincing reason is that I have Ph.D. in English. Not only has my education required a great deal of reading, but also a great deal of writing. Earning a doctorate in English is also the culmination of many of the other experiences that qualify me to tutor in vocabulary.

Writing

I have a B.A. in English from Dickinson College and graduated magna cum laude, an M.A. in English from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. in English from Howard University. My credentials include several years tutoring writing, teaching writing at the collegiate level, publishing my own scholarly and creative writing, and experience with free-lance copy and line editing.
